I'm writing this from Canada.

Even though I've been using a computer for a number of years, I'm not technically inclined. I bought a new Asus Eee 1000H netbook with XP yesterday, along with a D-Link router. This will be my first time using a router. I've been using an old PIII desktop (with Windows 2000 pro) for years which is connected to a cable modem. It has an optical drive, but no ethernet connection on it, only 1.1 USB. The problem is going through the CD setup, the router wants an ethernet connector to the computer which I can't provide. The new netbook has an ethernet connection, but no optical drive of course. I don't want to open the PIII box to install a NIC card. I understand that I may be able to find a USB to ethernet adaptor somewhere out there, that may cost me over $30. I can maybe ignore the CD wizard instructions, and set up the router for the netbook as per the Asus instruction manual. Any suggestions as to the best way to go about this. I'm stymied.

What D-link and modem model do you have?

Hi Roadkill:

It's a D-Link DIR-615 router plus a Scientific-Atlanta Webstar 2000 series cable modem.

I should let you know I don't have a wireless card or USB wireless adaptor for the old desktop (at least not yet). I would prefer to just directly connect the desktop to the cable modem, and use the router for the new Asus netbook, but that may not be feasible? I may also have to buy a separate optical drive to connect to the USB port on the Asus. Not sure which way to go.

your EEEpc has wifi, so connect simply using wifi to the routeur and configure ip by it's http interface, this'll let you connect to the internet from the EEEpc, in the mean time buy a wifi card for your desktop and a usb dvd writer for your laptop(you can buy a usb enclosure and a dvd writer you'll save a lot of money).

It sounds like it should be pretty simple (I hope). No matter what happens it can't be messed up completely, there's a factory reset on the router. Unplug power to your router, connect modem to router via ethernet cable. Plug in power, turn on. After about 30 seconds right-click the wireless icon in the laptop icon tray and view available wireless networks. you should see a new unsecured wireless connection labeled d-link or something. If there are more than one choose the 1st one, double-click it and connect to it. Try to go to www.thaivisa.com/forum if it works just leach off them, all done. Just kidding, choose yours. Type 192.168.0.1 as the address name:admin user:blank (nothing), run the wizard per the d-link manual. Choose DHCP (dynamic) and accept defaults. After router reboot, try to access the internet, it should work. When all is done secure your wireless connection per the manual as well. Hope this helps.

My apologies to Roadkill and NHJ for not replying sooner. Thanks for your reponses and ideas. I've been mucking around with the wifi trying to get it connected for the last couple of days. I had a signal after going through the setup, then lost it. Now I've managed to get it back again. I decided to go out and buy an external DVD drive. I figured I'd need one eventually, so why not now, since I had drivers and software to load. For the moment I'm switching from USB to ethernet to use the new laptop on the router and vice versa to connect the cable modem with the old PIII desktop. So far, even with the problems, I'm quite happy with the new netbook.
