Jasmine Rice.....the Real Mccoy

Featured Replies

My wife and I have lived in Thailand for 13 years....Jasmine rice is part of our daily diet. In the 5 trips we've made back to the US, we've always found the Thai Jasmine rice that we buy in the oriental markets to be of better quality than that which we buy in Thailand. We pay top Baht for the rice we buy in Thailand.....it's always labeled as Jasmine, but the taste is unmistakably inferior to the rice which is exported to the US. Wonder if anyone else has this experience and if anyone can shed light on why it might be so.

I've found the same thing here. Some bags of Hom Mali are spectacular and some, so so. The brands quality seem to change from harvest to harvest. I would imagine that with the love of rice here there must be some sort of ratings posted somewhere like there are for coffee, tea, chocolates, cigars, etc... Anyone know of any Hom Mali rating sites???

I would imagine that exported jasmine rice has to be of a consistently good standard as required by international trade standards.

Thailand's own domestic trade standards are somewhat less rigorous.

a country exports its better produce; its like any place else... for export, the flowers, oranges, apples etc are always marked export quality; for local use its the regular or less then that/

rice is the same
