September 18, 200817 yr Not one to expect much of our local English dailies, I found this little gem today on the Nation website. Does anyone else think that an international city like Bangkok deserves better than this kind of journalism? Thepthai sends apology to Samak Thepthai Senpong, assistant secretary-general of the Democrat Party, Thursday sent flower and apology card to former prime minister Samak Sundaravej. Thepthai said he as a junior politician would like to apologise Samak for having use language that might dissatisfy him while Samak was holding office as the prime minister. He said in the card that he would like to apologise Samak if he had violated him while performing his duty as an opposition MP. The Nation
September 18, 200817 yr I love the Nation when it quotes, fro example "a local shop owner said she supports PAD and feels they should be respected". Any anonymous nobody is considered a source worthy of mention if it suits the Nations agenda.
September 18, 200817 yr result of the country wide policy "students don't fail" and here I learned that nobody ever makes a mistake - it's always the other or someone else! So in Thai View the OP is wrong!
September 18, 200817 yr I probably shouldn't read this when I'm at work, gets embarassing trying not to laugh
September 18, 200817 yr I wonder if khun Samak noticed he had been violated. Yes the English grammar is crap but it gets the message across and at the end of the day papers like the Nation and Bangkok Post are aimed at the English speaking farangs so why should they care what we think? Even the few Thais who read those publications would hardly raise an eyebrow at the linguistic gaffes assuming, that is, they even notice them. I've stopped worrying about such things, if this is how the Thais wish to present themselves so be it. Anyhow three replies and nobody has said "I wonder how good the British press would do at producing a Thai language pape in London?"

Well mate, I would suggest that alot of potential overseas investors, visitors and dignataries (sp) do read the online versions of our Tinglish Dailies. And with the importance of face as it is....

I was told by a Nation employee that only 4 staff are employed on the website, open 24 hours a day that's a lot of output they're responsible for, plus they work for a pittance.
September 18, 200817 yr The papers both suffer from Thai staff who think their English is better than it really is and that they don't need to be edited.
September 23, 200817 yr Here's an interesting headline and article from the Nation. I still don't see the connection. Poll finds Flood victims blame corrupt officials By The Nation Published on September 24, 2008 Among more than 15,000 unregistered Internet cafes and computergame shops, many of them, which are popular among gay male clients, allow chatters to openly show off their genitals through webcams, a Bangkok seminar on child welfare was told yesterday. The Nation FYI, last month (or perhaps July) The nation laid off all, or almost all, of their expats, eventually hired back about half, and at half pay. Don't know how many expats they had to begin with. The Nation sure is having some financial problems. Don't want them to go the way of the World. Mac
September 24, 200817 yr Anyhow three replies and nobody has said "I wonder how good the British press would do at producing a Thai language pape in London?" Who knows but I guess that they would have the common sense to hire a Thai that could proof read.
September 24, 200817 yr "He said in the card that he would like to apologise Samak if he had violated him while performing his duty as an opposition MP. The Nation" It depends on what his duties are.
