Is abnormal when i need to download 1 file of 1 Gigabit... that can take a lot of time.

The downloads managers are banned from all the websites i use.

There are no problems.

If you download a file, a session is started between your computer and the computer that sends the file. During the session initiation, both computers determine the window size of a packet. If that window size is small, the bandwidth used for that specific session remains the same until a new window size is determined.

Now the window size of a packet is not only determined by your computer or your adsl line, but by all networks between your computer and the host you're trying to download from. If you pick a nearby host, e.g. in Thailand, the size can be quite big. The more hops between you and the host, the bigger the chance for a small-bandwidth connection.

If you start a 2nd session, the same thing happens again. And all those sessions added up show you the total amount of bandwidth used on your line. If the website you're downloading from bans downloadmanagers in order to limit too many concurrent connections, then be patient...... or check if you can get a file that big through bittorrent.

Thanks, so do you have a idea of a profesionnal connection i can get somewhere without any "no problem" of this sorte ? Maybe a high priced connection like 5K Bahts or 10K Bahts at month ?

(Please sorry my english,... french writer here).

I get the irony of your reply, but the point is that this is just how TCP/IP works. Yes, it can be annoying and no, changing just a small part of the whole network will not change anything.

This is basically what download managers do - instead of waiting for data to come in over a single session, the downloadmanager starts multiple sessions, where each session gets a different part of the file. All these sessions added together make the transfer often a lot faster since many sessions are established during the download.

Ironic enough, spending time on understanding how the internet protocols actually work usually turns out to be much cheaper than spending lots of money on a faster connection....

While in general what Prasert is saying is correct, but I doubt at those numbers. The OP indicates that he can only get files down at 20 kBps (Ko/sec is French Kilo Octets or Bytes!).

Which would mean a line speed of around 160 kbps.

Normally nowadays the bottle necks are not that slow anymore (not often anyway). I get single session downloads in at around 100 to 130 kBps (800 to 1040 kbps), and when using a download manager this goes up solidly against the speed ceiling of my connection (around 250 kBps for my 2M line).

These are the numbers I get om maybe 90% of the locations, when in the other 10% it gets much slower it is often the servers which are slow/overloaded.

As a wild guess I think that might be the case on the server Johan is downloading from, the server blocking multiple sessions is another indicator, very few actually do this, so they are probably trying to keep the server from getting too much overloaded.

One example are the servers from AVG (anti virus). The servers for the free version can get awfully slow and even time out, while their servers for the paid version are very fast!

Also possible is that his ISP is throttling on a per session base. Not really efficient as this is easily beaten by any P2P program and download manager, yet in Thailand several ISP's are still doing this.

If Johan could go to any other place with internet and see if he gets better speeds there, then he might know if going more expensive ISP wise can be a solution, or that the problem is indeed based at the servers he is trying to download from!

1 Gigabit is actually a quite small file (about 128 Megabyte). Although people generally don't talk about a Gigabit file but a Gigabyte file.

I guess the sites you are using are free file sharing sites like Rapidshare or Megaupload. Spend some money, get a Premium account and stop complaining.

Doubt it since they limit file size to around 100 Mbyte.

I have dedicated servers with 100 MBPS bandwich.

I'm not trying to download from any kind of free service or any "movie" to get fun. I'm working.

1 Go is like 1 000 Mo.

1 Ko is 1 kBps.

I can download at 300ko/sec from thailand servers but only 20ko/sec from Europe servers.

In the night time i can download at 50 or 60Ko/sec from Europe servers.

Yes something like that, is very slow.

If you know some pro service for internet, like lines for dedicates servers i would like to buy one of them.

Thanks.

Doesn't exist, and the ones which do exist are prohibitively expensive (can run into several hundred thousand of Bahts/month if you want proper speeds).

Even the Thai based hosting services have woefully slow international backbones. I have been trying to download stuff from a Thai based host when in Japan on a 20 Mbps connection and it topped out at a little bit over 1 Mbps, while downloading from big American hosts netted over 15 Mbps!

Only people hosting within Thailand are Thai websites which are getting accessed from within Thailand for 95% of the total traffic.

I have a problem to connect to the internet. I build a new house up hill from Hua Hin and there is no TOT line yet available. In Hua Hin down town I could get the free WLAN net without problems. Does anybody have some helpful suggestions how I can connect without TOT or WLAN ?

Thanks for your help and have a nice day.

Not true .... the file size for Rapidshare has been updated to 200 MB per file .... for Premium members it's 2 GB. Standard upload size for Megaupload is 1 Gig.

BTW JohanBKK can you share with us the European servers you download from? I wonder why you can't use download managers.
