Unable To Open Kmz, Kml Files In Google Earth

Featured Replies

I've spent a couple of days trying to solve this problem, have searched web and even placed messages on Google's own forums without success. Although this is a Google Earth problem I suspect the problem has to do with Windows configuration or setting somewhere.

I have just installed Google Earth 4.3.7284.3916 (but have tried 4.2 as well - same issue).

I am running Windows XP with all latest patches installed.

I cannot open any google earthe (kmz or kml files). I go to <file>, <open> on the

google earth menu and I always get the error " Fetch of C:/documents

and settings/dave/my documents failed: could not open file."

I can successfully create both kmz and kml files in google earth but trying to

reimport still gives the same error, even though the files can be

seen and written by Google Earth.

I've also tried clearing the cache and checking file associations in Windows.

Everything else on the PC works fine, so this is just some quirk that Google Earth is falling over.

Any suggestions or pointers?

Many thanks

Hi Artamus,

I don't know if you already resolved this problem. I'm just a new member here, wanted to share my little knowledge. :o

For this to work, make sure you have WinRar or WinZip installed on your system.

(of course also, Google Earth)

Here's the step:

1. Save the file (.kmz) to a certain folder

2. Go to the file, right click, select Open With, select Winzip

3. Right click the the file (doc.kml), slect Open With, select Google Earth

You can now view the file on Google Earth!!!

I hope I helped you with this issue.

Have a good day!

let me add another hint. On right click on any file you are presented with programs which can handle that file (extension). Even if you find in that list "Google Earth" don't click on it. Scroll down to "Choose program".

A sub-menu will open and you can find and point to Google Earth (look for the "Program File" folder. Here Google Earth and within that folder click on "googleearth.exe". Tick the box "always use this program to open this file"

This little step will assure the file extension has been recognized and written into the registry. Under normal circumstances you now can double-click on any .kmz file and they will open with Google earth.
