Leading Bangkok schools to offer lessons via webcast

BANGKOK: -- Over 20 of Bangkok’s leading schools are to provide webcasts of lessons to help children in rural schools benefit from expert tuition, Education Minister Adisai Bhodaramik announced yesterday.

Citing recent education developments in China, where famous schools are offering webcasts to other schools, he said that Thailand would follow suit.

“In the future over 20 of Bangkok’s leading schools will arrange courseware to be accessed by other schools”, he said. “Within three years we will see clear results. Children living upcountry must be as good as, or nearly equivalent to, their urban counterparts”.

Mr. Adisai said that he had also ordered the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to ensure that all small schools were equipped with at least two computers, a projector and a scanner over the next two years.

He also vowed to ensure that all schools were equipped by telephone lines by the end of 2004, to enable them to access Internet-based teaching.

Stressing the need to give everyone equal educational opportunities, the education minister said that Thailand must develop its education system to equal that of other countries, while ensuring that young people took pleasure from learning.
