Unsafe sex major risk factor for deaths among Thai people

BANGKOK: -- Records of the Public Health Ministry show that unsafe sexual behaviour remains the number one risk factor and potential cause of death among Thai people, followed by smoking and drinking alcohol.

Speaking at a " Gender, Sexual Health and Healthy Well-being " conference yesterday, Dr Wichai Chokeviwat of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, said in 2000, housewives were seen as the community members most at risk from sexual disease. Next year he expected it would be male sex workers topping the danger list, mostly from HIV/Aids infection.

" This trend has stemmed from changes in behaviour and society," Wichai said. "There are many things luring people to have unsafe sex -while the attitude about sex among Thai people is not to promote good sexual health."

Researcher Yannatorn Jianrattanakul studied questions about sex in the media, to find topics most hit on in question and answer columns in two newspapers, two magazines, and two websites.

In the four years between 2003 - 2007 she collected 4,4406 questions. She found women have more queries about sex than men- 25 per cent were about sexual affairs, 18 per cent about reproductive health, 18 per cent about sexual organs, 16 percent about beauty, 5 per cent about sexually transmitted disease.

She said the top five questions most asked by women were about the vagina, reproductive health, beauty, sexual intercourse, and society and culture. Men wanted information about sexual intercourse, the penis's size, sexual transmitted disease, and masturbation.

Yannatorn added that a sexual questionnaire appearing in the printed media showed many people do not understand how to protect themselves from sexually transmitted disease and unwanted pregnancy.

"Society has to find out the appropriate way to disseminate this information to build understanding and knowledge on this issue. This would help prevent and resolve the problems," she said.

The problem for a lot of married women is the little indiscretions that husbands sometimes have. Since prostitution it's pretty easy and readily available everywhere, this happens more frequently than one might think.

Because it's almost encouraged in this country. Thai Women turn a blind eye.

I knew a Thai female friend who's Thai husband had 3 Thai girlfriends. I asked her one day where he was, she replied

"He's at no:2's house wed & sat."

The hidden message is that women have not been well served by the education campaigns and it's time to focus more upon women's needs.

The poorest least educated Thai females are very well informed about the use of condoms to minimise the risk of contracting HIV.

Thai females may be ashamed to buy condoms, due to it being seen as not the done thing for a lady to do in Thailand.

The lack of education argument is wrong, its time to move on from it.

This report is complete and utter <deleted> written by ultra conservative individuals who believe you should have sex three times in one's lifespan, one for each of your three children.

As if the act of having sex kills more than tobacco, drugs and alcohol. <deleted>! - this has all the earmarks of the anti - alcohol comittee and that minister who spat the dummy about (foreign) couples making out on the beach during the full moon party.

Sensationalist and propagandanistic reporting and I don't care for it one way or another.

uhhhhhhhhhhhm, I stated that women have not been well served by the education campaigns I didn't say more education was needed, rather that it didn't achieve the necessary results. As such, the strategy has to reviewed and reworked to get the message to the groups at risk.

In the 1990's the MoH had effective HIV prevention campaigns that were looked upon as top of the class. Unfortunately, the success of the early programs along with the introduction of life saving medications caused the issue to fall to the side as the mortality rates declined.People forgot about herpes and HPV. There are serious long term consequences related to HPV. Condoms do nothing for women that need a PAP smear.

How dare you raise this, Spidey?

The "lack of education" argument needs to be kept alive...

The liberals need it so that they can continue to blame the "elite" for not doing "their duty to educate the poor".

I don't know when you see most Thai men have a mia noi you must think the sexes is distributed close to 50/50 so that does not add up. It means the women is as unfaithful as men, same as everywhere else in the world.

Dumb comments considering these are government statistics compiled by individual health authorities.

Thailand is a conservative (albeit hypocritical) country and the embarrassing behaviour of white trash on Thai beaches isn't tolerated - thank god!

And I thought smoking came after the unsafe sex that was caused by the alcohol consumption.

They also seem to have omitted the risk of sex with ladies who have stronger, bigger or better armed husbands.
