Since I quit my job with the intention of taking an extended holiday and perhaps moving permamnently to LOS the markets have crashed, my bank has been bought out and then part-nationalized, boat prices (yet to sell mine) have tanked, the Baht has lost about 15% of it's value and now there's a war kicking off...

I've never been superstitious (touch-wood) but... :o

Think of the glass as half full mate. Otherwise you will just end up in Pattaya. (sorry not nice)

Trust me, it will be a cold day n KrungThep before I set foot in Pattaya again :D

And since I don't drink, a glass half-full means someone has pinched me false teeth :o

So all this is YOUR FAULT? On a more serious note - I also have an offshore account with B&B. That wasn't a good week...

You invested in a Bed and Breakfast? :o

Yeah, it was a whole new concept: 'Topless Bed and Breakfast.' Needless to say the place went bust. ARF!

You're referring to the possible war between Thailand and Cambodia? I feel for all Thai peoples, but the decrease in the value of the baht was good for me, being a foreigner. Are you in the Thai Army or Navy? Things are not good most anywhere. Friends have had to "decapitulate." A word I don't like the sound of. However, I'm glad I was never able to save enough money to have invested in the Shlock Market.

Sounds like we are two of a kind. Same thing happens to me everything I plan except I get Oz dollars and its worse. Only thing is more boats are coming on the market so instead of a condo in LOS it may be a hole in the water. What kind of boat.

The best laid plans of mice and Ken... :o

However, since the border thing escalated the Baht has been creeping back up towards 60/GBP

:D What kind of boat.

9m UK canal narrowboat I've been living on for the last 10 years. Considered bringing it with me but just over the max dimensions for carry-on and I don't fancy its chances around the Cape.

Ever considered the Suez Canal ????? :D Actually, I've always wondered what life on a canalboat would be like and since I can't afford bricks and morter was considering it as an option if I retire in the opposite direction. Any serious comments ?? Is it viable or a nightmare ?

Don't worry as you still have your boat which you may need to escape this financial meltdown and the flood of bad debt that has been spreading around the globe. I am not superstitious either and do not believe in armegeddon however I have started building an Arc just in case. :D

Bit like Buster Bloodvessels' "Fatty Towers", a hotel for economy-sized people, he located it in Cliftonville (next to Margate in Kent) instead of Jomtien, with its seemingly-endless supply of potential customers ! :D

Boring, any way I'd want to go see the Great White Sharks at Seal Island on the way.

Actually, I've always wondered what life on a canalboat would be like and since I can't afford bricks and morter was considering it as an option if I retire in the opposite direction. Any serious comments ?? Is it viable or a nightmare ?

It's okay. A decent boat can be as warm and dry as a house or flat. Barges on residential moorings are now as expensive as land homes. By keeping a low profile I have managed to live on a private mooring for the last ten years averaging a grand a year for mooring and licence and no council tax (non required). Not bad for London, water/electrics/Internet too.

I wouldn't be averse to a similar arrangement in BKK or elsewhere, but never had any responses from anyone who has tried it. Seems ideal in both countries: one where I can't afford to own land and the other where I'm not allowed to own land - same-same.

O.k. thanks for that. Still sounds better than living in a tent. I guess if you keep moving you don't have to pay for a mooring but then you'll be wasting fuel.

As for doing the same in Thailand maybe it can be done. There are converted rice barges for sale at reasonable prices but I have no idea as to the legality of it except to say that Thais live on them so why not one of us. With sea levels rising over here it could be the way to go !!Maybe buy one as a business venture, transporting tourists up to Ayudhaya and living on it yourself with an all female crew.....way to go !! :o

i have seen on the web some house boats made from rice barges. But I don't know more than that.
