Getting A Drivers License

Featured Replies

Can someone acquire a drivers license here in Thailand if the person does not have a drivers license from any other country not even from his country of birth.

The person has a legal address in Thailand through his Embassy but no long term visa in hands as he works abroad.

Sp is it possible to enter a school or do some sort of testing to acquire a drivers license.

please help

My first guess would be yes. The usual process of id and copies and the medical cert and residency cert from embassy or immigration. Then you could go and apply but be prepared to deal with the class and testing portions. I know they have driving schools in Pattaya area so if you have someone go with you maybe they can "guarantee" if you go to their class you will get a license. Might cost more for all this

My answer is a "maybe" and "might be" and no firsthand knowledge.

I edit this answer to add that you need a visa other than a visa on arrival for 30 days or tourist visa

I too think yes. You'll have to have your Passport copied and translated, a letter from the immigration office stating your address in Thailand. You'll have to also get a letter from a doctor stating that you're healthy and don't have seizures (short visit) they know what you need. A motorcycle and/or car to test with. The auto license and car license are separate. You will need to have additional copies for each. I didn't have the motorcycle endorsement on my US license, but I sat through the class, took the tests, computer and driving and was able to get my license. My auto, they just looked at the translated copy of my license, the other paperwork, and then I took an eye test, gas and brake test (simple), they took my photo and I had my license within about 30 minutes. That was in Nang Rong, Buri-Ram province.

so no long term visa no possible your saying?

From every thing I've read on various sites, that is correct. No 1 year visa, no license. I've been using my International Driving Permit for the time being. Of course, you need a license in your home country to get that.

Then again, like many things here, one day you may show up and they won't even ask. Next day they'll want copies of things you've never heard of.
