This photo was taken outside Grand Palace, Bangkok last week.

Can someone tell me what's the name of this tree?

It looks like cherry blossom, but Bangkok is too hot for cherry tree.

Many thanks.

The english common name is "pink tabebuia". Thai name is "Chompu phanthip". Botanical name is "Tabebuia impetiginosa". Some people call it a "tabebuia ipe".

A lot of types of tabebuias will drop most, if not all of their leaves twice a year, then flower so much it will put the cherry blossom to shame. Once in mid november for the loy krathong, and again in April for the Songkran.

Most trees planted around temples have a purpose, and not just for it's beauty. It's leaves were used as a tea to help cure many different ailments, mostly for a runny nose. Inside the temple walls is a yellow tabebuia that is the best speciman I have ever seen!

nice tree,
