george Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 Bid to tidy up phone booths BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has begun an effort to tidy up public telephone booths following complaints that many of them are obstructing human traffic on footpaths. Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin, his deputy Samart Ratchapolsitte and city officials yesterday visited Watthana district to inspect telephone booths along Soi Thonglor, or Sukhumvit Soi 55, as well as in front of Thonglor police station. The officials were accompanied by executives of public telephone service providers TOT Corp, CAT Telecom and True Corp. Mr Apirak said the campaign to tidy up the booths would begin in Watthana because the district had more than 1,500 telephone booths. Following discussions with concerned officials and service providers, regulations have been agreed upon for the installation of phone booths. All providers say their booths will adhere to the regulations by Dec 31. Under the regulations, public phone booths must not block traffic or entrances and exits of buildings. The phone booths must not be installed permanently on footpaths around important locations, or on sewer covers or in space reserved for public activities. --Bangkok Post 2004-12-12
stumonster Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 I thought I read something about 2 years ago about removing excess and badly installed telephone boths. Are there any reporters in thailand or are they only press officers?
cojones Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 i can think of some sois where they have erected phonebooths that have completely blocked the footpath . you have to walk onto the road to get by it . i have never seen anybody use it as they all have mobile phones now
griser Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 You know what pisses me off about the booths? They always seems to erect them to the RIGHT of the bus stops making it impossible to see the bus coming! Put the damned things on the left why don't you. Greg
drummer Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 One mans obstruction is another mans good advertising ....
RDN Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 One mans obstruction is another mans good advertising .... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Perhaps they could also ask the electricity company to shift their poles out of the way. ( It'll be a cold day in he.ll when that happens. )
et33.com Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 make mobile phone cheaper make mobile calls cheaper reduce land lines by 75 percent make mobile calls the rate of current land lines and thai phone companies will dominate the world...
petedk Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 One mans obstruction is another mans good advertising .... Only too true. Have you noticed these red and yellow double phone boothes set up many months ago? They are every where along New Petchburi Road (and probably other places) and are used to advertise Liptons or whatever. I have never seen a telephone installed in any of these boothes. They are not even fixed to the pavement. During the rain season I saw 2 or 3 of blow over on to the road obstructing the traffic.

Do "public activities" include us poor pedestrians trying to walk on the footpaths?
chingy_ Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 I thought I read something about 2 years ago about removing excess and badly installed telephone boths. Are there any reporters in thailand or are they only press officer that was a different governer, the old fart that never do shiet.
Ijustwannateach Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 Yes, these nasty phone booths, they keep me from getting to all the noodle stalls and chicken fryers and short-floral-stretch-pants sellers that are the REAL reason I go to the sidewalks...
ASIC Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has begun an effort to tidy up public telephone booths following complaints that many of them are obstructing human traffic on footpaths. Seems to me it's it the slow speed of the human traffic that blocks human traffic?
Crushdepth Posted December 24, 2004 Posted December 24, 2004 What good is a phone booth next to a 6-lane highway anyway ? On the few occassions I've needed to use one I couldn't hear a ###### thing because of the traffic ! They are not even fixed to the pavement. During the rain season I saw 2 or 3 of blow over on to the road obstructing the traffic. That's pretty funny...see, they do have a function
Gazza Posted December 24, 2004 Posted December 24, 2004 I'm all in favour of moving them to improve pedestrian flow. But PLEASE!!!! Relocate them back into the Thai sunshine. They're so good as cheap saunas that you can sweat your bollocksoff in next to no time.
Rinrada Posted December 24, 2004 Posted December 24, 2004 Also they are guest friendly as short time hotels
Lioneric Posted December 25, 2004 Posted December 25, 2004 The telephone boots is only minor problems, the 2 main problems are airpollution and traffic. 1) The Government are engaraging using NGV, When public buses will convert to NGV, the air in Bangkok are much fresher. 2) Bulit more fly over in junction or dig some under bypass to avoid waiting traffic lights, I notice that the time for traffic can reduce shorter and this may help to ease the traffic jam. 3)The telephone boots don't block as the street vendors .
RDN Posted December 25, 2004 Posted December 25, 2004 .... air pollution and traffic.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why not bring in an annual exhaust emissions test for all vehicles? And while they're at it, a test of brakes, tyres, steering, suspension and lights? I think we all know the answer to that one
astral Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 The dead line is up tomorrow. Is the job finished................ or even started????
RDN Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 The dead line is up tomorrow. Is the job finished................ or even started???? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't you think they've got other problems to sort out first?
mbkudu Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Got no problem with the phone boxes; at least they are stationary. What about the motorcycle taxies and uhh, police motorcycles using the foot paths as extra lanes . Still love this country though, safe sidewalks or not . Better a dangerous sidewalk than a mugger in the park.

It is lots more than the bloody unused phone boxes.
Sphere Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 It would be a good idea to start with that florist / fruit seller at the corner of Sukh Soi 33. Whatever space left is taken over by Japanese housewives gawking at his flowers and forcing pedestrians to step on to the road and risk getting run over.

Jeff Jarvis Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 Last week, a new phone box went up on the sidewalk next to my office on Soi Nana, right next to the other 2 phone boxes, completely blocking the busy sidewalk. Now, thousands of people a day have to step out into traffic. Dumb.

If it is, I used to come out of there - the supermarket - with both hands carrying shopping bags - and found it very difficult getting past that place.
