Could Pad Be Held Responsible For Damage?

With the wholesale damage that the PAD has managed to bring about, shouldn't they (PAD leaders) be made responsible for lost revenue, inconvenience to international air travellers that could not leave because they closed the Suwannaphum airport, property damage to the government house, etc.?

Good question. I'm sure there will be class action lawsuits starting in the USA to seize the assets of PAD bigwigs. Before anyone scoffs, it's been done in other political situations. The fact is that the PAD actions were illegal and caused injury to third parties. And if the PAD folks are like other politicos in Thailand, they have some investments either directly or indirectly in the USA.

There is another thread about passengers missing their flights and kissing their airline tickets goodbye. Multiply this several thousand times.

I am thinking of people having to be rebooked, put up in a hotel and being fed. Who is going to pay for all that? Tour companies? The foreign visitors themselves? If a class action case was brought up against PAD leaders - there would be enough trouble to keep them busy for a LOOOOOOOONG time.

IDIOTS! I imagine they have no clue of the amount of ramifications this is going to bring down....

In any civilized nation, these thugs would be ERASED, post haste

All of Thailand is affected - that is right. But the ones who are doing this to the country is the PAD. In my humble opinion, the PAD is the minority here.

If they are the ones doing the damage - I believe they (PAD) should be made responsible for paying for the damage.

There was an article a few days ago about how much damange was done on property at the government house - something to the tune of 100 million baht. That does not include all of the inconvenience brought on to the public, the school that was affected by the blaring loudspeakers at the PAD rally sites, inconvenience to taxis and buses, communters, etc.

Yes it is difficult to calculate. To make things simpler, let's just say this figure is going to be an astronomical figure.

Who would be able to calculate it, all of Thailand will pay for it as the entire economy is going to take a big hit.

What is the cost of damage to the tourism industry? Lost bookings for tours, hotels, local transportation, souvenir sales, services, etc. A tourism expert said that as much as 30 percent of the market could be lost. Wonder how the tourism sector will incident?

Will PAD be responsible for this loss?

Who is going to pay for overstaying their visas? PAD?

yeah send them the bill. What is the cost to "rent" out your international Airport for 2 days???

Furthermore what does an Airport have to do with politics?

Do these protesters have jobs, do they have to go to work some where? Will they blame the PAD when their job is gone because they have ruined the economy?

I'm just utterly dumbfounded by the whole situation.

Here's an interesting quote from The Nation.

"Tourism Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said the country normally welcomes 100,000 visitors per day, of whom 70 per cent drop an average of Bt3,500 per day while here - a total of Bt245 million per day.

"Wattana Thanasakcharorn, president of the Krabi Chamber of Commerce, forecast the provinces would lose Bt4 billion-Bt5 billion over the next two months."

I guess you have to trace the money to who is financeing the PAD and assume they are the one/ones who are giving the ultimate orders, OK for the ideas, etc. I doubt the real responsible peoples are on the front lines and may not even be putting in a appearance at the rallies, protest points, etc.

I would also like to know who is financing the PAD. I mean food/water/transportation/equipment/t-shirts/hand clappers etc.. etc..(not to mention stories of the protesters receiving payment), it must be costing someone a huge amount of money... but who?

The fact this has been allowed to continue means whomever is in control of Thailand wants it to continue and these people have no sense of personal responsibility. These protesters should have been completely crushed by a show of force on day 1. Keeping the peace is not always peaceful and the only hand people ever will respect is an iron one, but the lunatics are allowed to light incense and eat Som Tam in their yellow shirts upon the tarmac of the airport, what an embarrassment and disgrace. This is the Thailand the people in power want. If I was in a position to vote with my feet I would cross the border and never return but I'm not so I wait it out from the sidelines and hope it gets better. I do love Thailand but they are under the fist of an intolerable regime who refuse to allow democracy by any means necessary. My faith in this country's development has been permanently destroyed and that is not hyperbole.

That will probably remain a mystery to us all - but we may have our own private thoughts about who is behind. But the visible ones who could be brought to justice are those PAD leaders. It will all depend on whether the court will have to power to make them responsible for footing the bill.

The same people who have always controlled Thailand until Thaksin started to challange their monopoly. :o

Go ask a Thai person. Everyone on the street seems to have the same idea!

This is what currently makes the round as costs rack up (from the Bangkok POst, here: http://www.bangkokpost.com/271108_Business...008_biz29.php):

The government will establish a new fund to assist tourist operators and exporters affected by the closure of Suvarnabhumi Airport by anti-government demonstrators.

Deputy Prime Minister Olarn Chaipravat said the fund would offer loan guarantees to cover up to 50% of the risks carried by local banks. The fund, which would operate with guarantees similar to those offered by the Small Business Credit Guarantee Corp, could begin operations as early as next month." ...

"Weerasak Kohsurat, the Tourism and Sports minister, said the ministry had yet to fully evaluate the losses suffered by the industry. But he said the damage would be protracted and could run well into 2009.

Kongkrit Hiranyakit, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, said damages to the industry could top 100 billion baht with up to 100,000 direct and indirect job losses through mid-2009. "This situation is worse than the [2004] tsunami. The country's image has been wiped out and it will be difficult to revive. Who will come to visit Thailand?" he asked.

On Tuesday night, almost 3,000 foreign tourists were stranded at Suvarnabhumi Airport without any help from the government.

One tourism expert said Thailand would definitely lose huge tourism revenues in this peak season. Normally, the number of foreign tourists from November to January averages 1.2 million to 1.5 million per month. They stay about nine days in Thailand and spend about 4,000 to 4,200 baht per day.

Natawut Amornvivat, the president of Bangkok Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said the CNBC Asian Business Leaders Awards were the first casualty of the airport blockade. The meeting, originally to be held today and tomorrow in Bangkok, has been taken off the calendar.
