May I know why you need to fumigate your land ?

If you want to kill soil borne diseases and weed seeds to grow crops, I suggest you contact the agrichemical shop in your locality for a chemical called Basamid, a soil fumigant in powder form. I think it is still available in Thailand and the direction for use is on the label. When applying don't forget to use a face mask and see that the breeze is not blowing towards you.

The other chemical methyl bromide is now banned.

Another cheaper but safer method is by soil solarization. Google can explain it better than I do.lol.

If you have difficulty in understanding how to use Basamid, post it here again. I used this chemical before and will try to explain to you step by step.

Thanks for your answer.

I need to sterilise the soil because we are trying a new kind of fruit that was never done before in Thailand and the advise from the people who send me the seeds was to fumigate the soil with methyl bromide which is still legal in Europe till 2013. But not in Thaialnd? So if you have the time to explain me the use of Basamid and where to get it, I would be very grateful

As far as I know methyl bromide is banned for use in Thailand for quite sometime. But you can check with the agrichemical shop near your locality. I live in Chiangmai and whereabout are you ?

Are you trying to grow fruit trees from seeds ? If so I would suggest you use an imported vegetable seed media which is usually quite free from soil borne diseases to sow your seeds in polybags before field planting. Vegetable seed research stations in Thailand have been using the media for long time to germinate their seeds for breeding work without having to sterilize it, just add a dilute soil fungicide  like metalaxyl, after sowing the seeds.

If you would like to sow the seeds direct to the field and use Basamid please do as follows :

1. Sprinkle 100 gms. of Basamid to one square metre of moist land area which has been worked to a depth of 20-30 cms. In the shortest time possible cover the treated area with transparent plastic and tuck all the sides well into the soil. Chemical reaction starts as soon as the chemical comes into contact with moisture.

2. At temperature of about 30 degree C during the day, the treated soil should be sterilized between 10-14 days. After that period remove the plastic to let the residual gas evaporate from the soil. Leave the soil for 2-3 days.

3. To check any residual gas is left in the soil, sow some mung bean ( the green colour bean that is used as bean sprouts sold in the market ) that has been soaked overnight in water. If the beans germinate within 2-3 days, your soil is safe for planting.

4. In addition to the safety precautions mentioned earlier, use working gloves to sprinkle Basamid.

A kilogram of Basamid should be 200 Bht. or more nowadays. English is not my mother tongue. If you have any inquiry needs to be clarified please message me with your phone number to call you back. I speak English better than I can express in writing.

Hi cmfarmer, thanks again man I owe you one. I am from holland living in chonburi for 23 years now. I am not a farmer but a retired businessman. A company in holland is doing a try out growing fruit overhere . Sorry I am not allowed to tell you which kind of fruit.

They put me in charge of these project because of my experience with the ways of doing business in thailand etc etc.

So they ask me to find out a few things, like the quality of the soil, what is lawfull here compared to europe etc., before they send in there staff beginning next year. By the way they are bringing in the plants not the seeds next year. My mistake.

If you have somemore info please call me 0812941208 and my name is, yeah you guessed it right, ferry

Thanks again

Funny you should ask about that stuff. I have a letter from the Thai Ag authorities who were undertaking a census last year – in prep for its phasing out. I personally have never used the stuff and no nothing about it, but the census details were ultimately destined for the UN – who are running a SEA program to get rid of the stuff from throughout Asia.

Contact a guy called Hennie Verbeek at the UN in Bkk on 02-2881871. He is the UN Enviroment Agency guy specifically dealing with the implementation of the program to phase out the use of Meth/Bromide in Thailand and elsewhere in South East Asia – well, he was last year, so he should know everything about it that needs to be known (e.g. where to buy, what alternatives ect etc….)

I don’t think its banned yet (??), but yes, it’s certainly on it’s way out. Its big use in Thailand was (is?) of course the rice industry, but the timber industry still uses it (illegally ??) to treat seedling soil and timber.
