What Does 'keb Tok' Mean?

Featured Replies

Hi, a 'woman friend' of mine sometimes puts messages on her IM page, and when I ask her what they mean she wont say. The latest message reads 'KEB TOK', I think it means something to do with falling. Can someone explain what it might mean?

เก็บตก - In most cases it means to 'gather', to 'get from'... picture a table with a bunch of crumbs on it - someone sweeps them off and you try and catch as many as you can... or picking up fruit that has fallen from the tree. It can be used like "What are the 'take homes' of this seminar" etc.

From the dictionary it says เก็บของที่ผู้อื่นทำไห้ตกไว้ gather things which someone else has caused to fall intentionally. What do you think? Pick up the pieces? rescue you/her? It is a somewhere for you to start.

In RID's "Dictionary of New Words" the term is given a more abstract meaning in addition to the basic meaning which Jay-Jay notes.

From Lexitron: "เก็บตก [V] pick; collect; gather"

Def: "เก็บสิ่งที่ยังคงหลงเหลืออยู่." "to gather things which were left behind."

From "New Words"

เก็บตก ก. เก็บบเรื่องเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ หรือเรื่องเบื้องหลังจากงานหรือกิจจกรรมต่าง ๆ เช่น "ข่าวนี้เก็บตกมาจากพิธีเปิดฟุตบอลโลกที่เยอรมานี" "เรื่องนี้ฉันเก็บตกมาจากที่ประชุม"

" . . . a verb meaning to pick up small pieces of information or background from various sources or activities. Examples: "I picked up this news item at the football opening ceremonies in Germany." "I gleaned this information from the meeting."

[isn't it interesting that in English we use the term "to glean" in the same abstract sense as Thai does!]

However, I still do not understand the relevance the the OP's context.

Geezer,

Where do you see the notion of "intent" in the Thai definition?

[sorry; duplicate unintended] เครื่องมันเก็บตกไว้

I am still using the 2525 version of RID because it is easier to carry around, this is the second time I have been gainsaid by the updated version. In the context the OP's question this is in a message as a sort of mantra I thought. I will look at the big Tome and have another try.

Hmmm. She posted her message 'Keb Tok' after I had posted my message 'I keep falling..............deeper, and deeper'. I am hoping it is a reply to what was my message.

What does น้ำตาลเรียกพี่! mean?

From the dictionary it says เก็บของที่ผู้อื่นทำไห้ตกไว้ gather things which someone else has caused to fall intentionally. What do you think? Pick up the pieces? rescue you/her? It is a somewhere for you to start.

This is not correct should have read ให้ตก to be intentional, I can't help saying ทำให้ even when it is not there.

น้ำตาลเรยกพี่ I was told means Sugar calls you Pi, you are very sweet, can't think how it applies here though. There is another similar เกลือเรยกพี่ salt calls you Pi , you are very mean. If I remember correctly.

I found out she meant เก็บของที่ผู้อื่นทำไห้ตกไว้
