Dear Sir,

I am a 40 year old British medical specialist thinking to move into Thailand after marrying my long-time Thai girlfriend next month.

In a letter received from the Thai Medical Council ergarding the granting of a medical licence, they refer to an "original household registration (Residence certificate) issued by the ministry of Interior " as one of the necesary requirements.

What is this household registration ? I am planning to get an O-type visa after marriage and extend it to a yearly stay. Can I get this household registration after that or I need to become a permanent resident first ? ( A very unfavorable situation for me as I will need to break my practice for 3 years).

Also, If I get this 1 year residence permission do I have to be physically present in Thailand for most of this time ? ( In order for this year to count towards the 3 year requirement for permanent residence)

Many thanks

Nelson

The document records where a Thai citizen is officially registered to live.

For you, you will need a letter from the British Embassy in Bangkok giving details of your Thai address.

Once you have your one year visa, you can apply for a re-entry permit and travel outside the country, returning on the same visa.

There is then no break in your stay.

After 3 years of unbroken stay you can apply for the Residence Permit.
