Tornado
I have had a lot of people contact me or others saying they would like to help out in clean ups, hospitals and just general volunteer work. If you are aware of "clubs" that are looking for volunteers, please post contacts here. If we all get in and help, we will be up and running again in no time. Is Lions or Rotary doing anything specific?

cdnvic
Two Posts from Sao Jiang Mai http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showuser=9746 Hi, Don't mean to take anyone away from this site, but just wanted to say that The Nation's web site is getting seriously clogged, so we have been asked to set up a mirror site for them on our own web site, www.chiangmaicitylife.com and just click on the news link on the top of the page. You can read all of The Nation's news as it is updated simultaneously as The Nation's and Phuket Gazette's sites. Such a tragedy. Chaing Mai's numerous magazines are all getting supplies together to send down south, so if anyone wants to contribute you can also contact us through our site. This is what we are told is needed: Chemicals to get rid of smells Toilet paper Packets of noodles and canned goods Underwear Sanitary towels Flip Flops Milk Drinking water Blankets Material to wrap bodies (although by the time our convoy gets there it may be too late) Coffins Formalin for corpses Please drop off your donations at SP Publishing: 11/1 Soi 3, Bamrungburi Road, T. Phra Singh, A. Muang Chiang Mai or call 05333 814455-6. You can also drop your donations off at the Citylife offices at 3 Chomdoi Road, T. Suthep, CM. I believe that they are driving down Thursday night or thereabouts. Pim

SunbeltAsia
Hospitals: clothes, shoes, counseling: Wachira Phuket Hospital and other hospitals say there is an urgent need for shoes, shorts and T-shirts, especially in sizes large enough for foreigners. Shoes are the priority right now. Many of the Thais and foreigners who were hit by the wave lost their shoes, with the result that many have foot injuries from walking or running on broken glass and other sharp objects. Stores in Phuket have given many pairs of shoes, but most of these are in sizes suitable only for smaller people. Any footwear large enough for foreigners is welcome; even rubber flip-flops would be a great help. Many people have lost all or most of their clothes and need T-shirts or shorts to get by for a few days. Donations may be taken direct to any of the major hospitals: Wachira Phuket, Phuket International; Patong Hospital; Mission Hospital; Bangkok Phuket Hospital. Many victims are still walking around in a daze and; some have lost love ones or do not know where they are. Any person with the time to go to the hospitals and help is asked to do so. In some cases just hearing a calm voice amid the confusion can help.

Tornado
ESP Construction Company has been asked to urgently make 60cm x 40cm x 200cm (Falang Size) wooden boxes (caskets). The urgent need is for a boat soon to be on the way from Phi Phi Island. The requirement is for 500 boxes. immediately. More boats will be on the way from Khao Lak also, so the demand will go up. We have contacted our normal building materials suppliers and have gotten, donated, at or below cost, some 100 sheets of 6mm plywood and 2 x 4cm ruff cut wood. It takes 1 1/2 sheets of plywood and 5 pieces of 2 x 4cm wood per box, so much more are needed. If other persons in the construction business can please contact their normal suppliers of lumbar and try to get donated 6mm plywood or plywood at reduced prices, this would help. ESP Construction will buy what we need to make up the rest at this time and wait for later donations or reimbursement. This urgent need alone will stretch local stocks, so Bangkok companies will be contacted tomorrow and any assistance with Bangkok suppliers is appreciated also. Bradley E. If anybody is leaving from Samui to Phuket (my friend needs to get to the hospital there) and would consider giving us and maybe a few others transport please let me know. My contact details follow, please use them rather than replying to this post (thx). If anyone knows of any voluntary computer related work anywhere else that I could be of better use in please let me know. I've also done a fair bit of systems and database admin if that helps. I can speak only English and very poor Thai (sorry, i'm learning). meadish_sweetball
Swedish interpreter/translator with fluent English and Thai skills I speak and write English and Swedish fluently and without effort, and speak Standard Thai fluently enough for acting as an interpreter from and into Thai from and into Swedish and English (nearly completed BA in the Thai language and 10 years travelling in Thailand, as well as 3 years of living in Thailand.) I have 2 years' experience of translating documents within various fields, and I have also acted as an interpreter between all three languages on various formal and informal occasions, of which a few involved interpreting for sick and injured Swedes in Thai hospitals. I have also completed one year of military training as a quartermaster and I am used to working in a stressful environment. I would be happy to assist with my language skills wherever I am needed the most. Please PM me through this web forum and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
I just got off the phone with a man who answered the number given for the Rotary club above. I told him that I am an expat living in Bangkok, willing to come down and help. He said. "Do it!" He said that my help would be very much appreciated, and that rather than waiting on lists for known organizations, that just showing up and offering help is the way to really be effective. I asked him where I should take the bus too, and he said that Kow Lak (the national Park just north of Phuket), is the neediest place he knows of. Show up and you will be put to work. I am going to bring my own blankets and a bunch of pairs of flip-flops, as I hear shoes are needed. But other than that, just what my muscles can offer. I encourage anyone who feels they could do this to do it. It will be an amazing adventure and will really be of help to the people in the area. I love this country and will do whatever I can to help. joebuzzard
A friend just returned from Phuket. He had been hanging around at the hospitals, just talking to people. Most of the people he was talking with were Scandinavian. Even though he could only speak English, he could still just talk to the people, get them out of their shells. It made him feel good, and it probably did the other people good, too.
Tornado
An Australian friend of mine (Annie) is helping at Phuket Town Hall and has asked for tents to be donated to the Town Hall as many are still sleeping outside. She also said, any foreigner that hasnt registered at their Embassies, go along to Town Hall as every Emabssy has an offical there - even if your an expat as if they are not looking for you, they can go onto the next. You can also register to help, from driving people, councelling etc.

I don't have any specialist skills (apart from scuba diving). I'd like to help, but I don't want to come all the way from BK if I am going to just get in the way of those who know what they are doing. It would make more sense to save the cost of travelling and donate the cash instead.

cusper
Hi to all, if you have the time and a pickup there is a lot of need at the thai resorts/beaches north of Khao lak. Find your Makro stores and the local bulk suppliers of chemists. They are in desperate need for masks, iodine, disinfectant, gloves, paracetomal, baby milk powder, drinking yoghurt and milks of long life, enrgy bars etc. There is a ton of food and water, the Thais have sent loads of clothes. Where we went near Takua Pua all the beaches north and south are completely trashed upto 500 meters inland. The stench is strong .take a mask. Try to find the smaller relief centers, just ask the rescue workers in the orange overalls, they will direct you. This is much bigger than is being reported and they will need help for a considerable time yet.

lucadg
I'll go to Phuket and probably Phi Phi on the 11t of January to bring some money I ve been collecting directly to some affected people / families. - I am trying to create a direct contact between my Italian donors and the people I give the money to, hoping a direct relationship results in continued help in the future. We all know what happens when TV stops talking about things. Can anybody help me indicating people who may need financial help? I know unfortunatelly there are many, but that could help spare precious time and getting relief where it is most needed. I promised my donors to give the money directly to the people who will use it, so no associations or temples. Nothing wrong with them, but it would be impersonal. - If anybody needs me to do something on site, look for somebody or something like that, I ll try to help. Just drop me a line on [email protected] and I ll see what I can do. As I said time is precious, so I'll give priority to requests which are clear and precise and do not require extra emails. I apologise in advance for those people who'll seek my help and I won't be able to.
