Which Pattaya Hospital Won't Rip Me Off ?

I had a phone call from a pal who was in Pattaya Memorial hospital after a minor motorbike accident. I said oh no are you OK what happened?... i will come and see you first thing in the morning. He said you wont it's 15000Bht a night I'm getting out of here first thing! at least he still had hes sense of humor!

The 15,000 baht must have included other services. A night in a private room in PIH cost me 10,000.

Room rates could quite possibly be a good indicator of the overall cost level of any given hospital, which I have found generally has absolutely nothing to with quality of service or professionalism.

Anyone want to publish room rates for Pataya hospitals? I would, however have never stayed in one, only Bkk ones.

EG Hospital Name - Basic Share xxxxB. Private xxxxB, VIP xxxxxB ICU xxxxxB, Birth Packages etc.

I was diagnosed by BPH that I needed a hip replacement. The doctor was 'delighted' at the thought of some money for an operation coming his way. Told me I had to have the Op immediately or I would be in agony etc... That was 2 years ago :o and it still only hurts a bit!

Anyway, for this type of medical procedure (not sure about minor ops etc...) operation, the Medical Forum on Thai Visa had posts saying how good the hospital in Sattahip is. I dont have the thread, but if you go to that forum there is plenty of information for you to search through. Its the 'naval' hospital I believe.

With the exchange rate at 48 Baht at the moment (for the pound not the Euro), I suspect that my operation quote of around 400,000 Baht a couple of years ago, would now mean its cheaper for me to fly back to the UK and have the Operation privately in the UK. What strange times these are :D

Getting old is a very expensive business, even in Thailand.

It seems the doctors here are far too quick to consider the knife.

Greetings from Chiangmai Ram Hospital.

Regarding your e-mail, we would be very please to provide you the requested treatment. The cost of MRI Shoulder is 6,000 THB not including 2,500 THB for contrast. The estimated cost of Arthroscopic should (rotator cuff tear) is around 150,000 -200,000 THB (including doctor fee, room & meal, operative charge and medications)

The appointment for consultation with Dr. Wattanai Atthakorn, our orthopedic who is specialized in arthroscope, is needed. He usually comes to the hospital only on Sunday at 05.00 - 08.00 pm. Practically, Dr. Wattanai would like to check with the problem part and discuss about proper treatment for the affected part. Then he will let you know about the estimated cost of that treatment.

Greetings from Bumrungrad International.

Thank you very much for your email and enquiry in our medical services. Regarding your inquiry, kindly be informed that the price of Arthroscopic shoulder to correct rotator cuff tear: approximately 285,000-305,000 Baht** per 1 side with 3 days hospitalization.

MRI (Shoulder) cost 14,800 baht

However, we would suggest you to see our physician first for initial consultation so that the doctor could recommend you with suitable treatment plan, as treatment method and price may vary based on each patient's condition.

Doctor's Consultation Fee ranges from 600-1500 baht

These are rip off prices as these operations a few years back would have been around half of the cost.

Maybe India is a viable option these days ?

I had heard good reports of Phya Thai Sri Racha, but my own personal experience was not good. I consulted a specialist there with some severe stomach problems and he diagnosed cancer which turned out to be completely wrong. I really wasn't too impresed with the set up there, but maybe I just had a bad experience - as you can have in any hospital.

I have taken my wife to Samitivej, Sri Racha on a number of occasions and have been very satsfied with the quality of treatment and service. It is not particularly cheap, but certainly cheaper that most private Bangkok hospitals, and it goes without saying that is it way cheaper than the money machine, commonly known as Bangkok Pattaya.

I had the exact opposite experience at Samitivej hospital in Sri Racha. They recommended and had my 30-year old thai girlfriend with no history of cancer to have a mammogram. Mammograms are not recommended in the US until age 50. In short Samitivej put $$ and in front of my girlfriends health. Lets make a few extra bucks, and so what if unnecessary mammograms cause excessive exposure to x-ray radiation.

I'll give Phya thai a try next time.

Have heard good things about Pattaya International but not had first hand experience. The others you mentioned, I wouldn't go to either.

I can't say anything about the hospital part, but I have been several times to their dental clinic...for some fairly major work. Prices are great, staff is fantastic. I would highly recommend it....

My friend's wife got a nose job in Pyathai hospital in Siracha. She now looks like Frankenstein's sister!

I used to be reasonably satisfied with PIH, until yesterday.

My gf and I have been using PIH for 3 years and have notched up quite a few visits over that time.

Yesterday we went in there to see a dermatologist to have a look at a rash my gf had developed. We've visited dermatologists there on many occasions and know that the fee is normally around 500 baht.

When we came downstairs to pay the bill I was shocked to see it was 2,500 baht. I knew the medicine wasn't going to be much over 200 baht. After querying that, she found out from the pharmacy that the medicine was indeed 300 baht. (Medicine here seems to be always priced to the nearest 100 baht)

That left us with a balance of 1,300 baht. I asked the cashier what the 1000 was for and they said it was the dermatologist's fee. I explained that we'd seen dermatologists at PIH many times and the fee was never over 500 baht. The cashier then made a phone call (apparently to the doctor) and said we can have a discount of 500 baht....so we ended up paying 800 baht in total after about 20 minutes of negotiation. Whew...that was hard work!

All I can say is EXAMINE YOUR BILL VERY CLOSELY!

PIH - How do you examine the bill closely at PIH when the cashier won't even give you an itemised bill until AFTER YOU PAID even after asking her two times? Is this normal at PIH these days compared to the past experiences by the above poster?

I went to PIH on the weekend and at the registration desk I asked for the price to see the correct specialist department for my injury, but only a general doctor was available. I was told that specialist would only be there at night. I was told it costs 200 baht to register with the hospital, 1,000 baht to see doctor and 800 baht for one Xray. The final bill wasn't too far off at around 3,500 baht with some extra charges for things I needed. Doctor fee was actually 100 baht less, but this was supplemented with a 100 baht nursing charge so came to the same amount of 1,000 baht together. There were actually two Xrays done but only one Xray charge on the bill. Do hospitals usually charge per Xray?

Fractured my clavicle yesterday after being knocked of my motorcycle , so in a situation like that where would you go looking for treatment without having to worry about being price gouged - like what unfortunately happened to me in Samitijev in Siracha.

Thai government hospital in a rural province. Hassle, crowds etc etc but might get cheaper treatment if not exactly first class.
