Not rock but there's no point starting a new thread for this. Rock Gig/Decent DJs? There's no big difference!

So does anyone have any information about James Lavelle at 808 next Friday?

Cost? Availability of advance tickets?

HI,

Lavelle's performance is 750 Baht which comes with 2 complimentary drinks. If you have any other questions feel free to contact us at **please pm poster for details--email removed per forum rules--sbk***

I heard Sek Loso is doing a gig at the Impact Arena in late June. You wont get a better blend of thai and rock than him. (In my opinion of course).

I'd have to second that. You can get a bit more info on his gigs and other at www.sekloso.net

Silly Fools also rock out pretty big time if you want to enjoy good Thai rock. Overtone Pub in RCA is probably the best art house style guitar type pub...it is run by the guy who runs Prart Music School, where some of the best Thai guitarists have studied. Silly Fools, Blackhead, the Sun (Hin Lek Fai), and Olarn Project are regular visitors. Jimmy Page popped in last year on his visit to Bkk.

Anybody check out the new Bkk Rocks Pub mentioned above in Asok? It looks good, but often these house band places are rather disappointing and overpriced.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil

Thursday, 19 June 8.30pm

Rain Dogs Bar & Gallery

Theatrical Release: Apr 10, 2009

Director: Sacha Gervasi

Runtime: 120 min

'The most stirring release of the year thus far.' --Antony Lane, The New Yorker

'A phenomenal rockumentary.' --Camille Dodero, Village Voice

'A complicated portrait of complicated men, an adeptly assembled character study that shows how limitless fame and fortune might not be the real recipe for happiness.' --Robert Levin, Critic's Notebook

'Sacha Gervasi's powerhouse doc brings humor and fervent focus to Toronto musicians, supporting their families with day jobs, who won't give up the dream.' --Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

'Supplies all the rocked-out comedy and Rocky-like redemption you could want.' --Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com

As the camera follows Anvil on a European tour organized by an inept manager and beset by comical, this-can’t-be-real moments--flubbed itineraries, audiences that can be counted on one hand, club owners who refuse to pay for gigs--it might be easy to mistake ANVIL! for a THIS IS SPINAL TAP mockumentary. But despite the snicker-inducing heavy-metal trappings, this is also a warmly human portrait of two men pursuing their creative passions despite Sisyphean odds. The film is at its best when it explores the codependent friendship between the optimistic Lips and the more pragmatic Reiner (the two bicker like an old married couple); their relationships with their families (some of whom are still supportive and others who wish the fiftysomething pair would just grow up); and the difficulties of pursing a career in music (while Lips’s siblings are solidly middle-class, the guys in Anvil just wanna rock--and they have made financial sacrifices to do so).

Their struggles will ring true to anyone who has felt the pull of the artist’s life and wondered whether it would ever pay off. In Anvil's case, audiences will be rooting for them to finally make it to the big time.

No surprise in that, given the current state of feature films, or in the fact that “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is a documentary about a heavy-metal band. But this film is about a failed heavy-metal band, which sounds about as purposeful as a vegan shark. Back in the nineteen-eighties, Anvil was, if not huge, on the verge of hugeness. It was never, according to the movie, one of the Big Four—a term that I always associated with the Paris peace conference of 1919, but which, on further inspection, turns out to refer to Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. (Specialists might prefer to file them under thrash metal, that delicate subset of the genre, but “Anvil!” is wise enough to steer clear of such hairsplitting, not least because, in a world where most of the guitarists look like exploded spaniels, there is an awful lot of hair to split.) Still, Anvil had its adherents, and we find a swarm of them in a clip of the Super Rock Festival of 1984, in Japan, where the band’s lead singer, Steve Kudlow, can be seen onstage playing his guitar with a sex toy, thus raising the question of whether he takes his plectrum to bed.

Live music afterward:

And Brown Sugar sucks a big one.

I happen to like Brown Sugar quite a bit. The Thai menu is excellent, though the drinks are so-so. The live ban are repetitive, but they play the kinda songs that I love.

But everytime I go, I vow to myself never to return again because the waiters are often dishonest by overcharging tipsy clients or shortchanging them. Yesterday night, I was out with some Thai friends, and as usual when it came to paying the bill, there was the customary insistence of paying among us friends. My friend took out cash, but I insisted on paying. But the waiter refused my credit card, telling me cash only cos the machine is spoilt. I didn't have enough cash on me, so my friend had to pay (resulting in quite a loss of face for me). The most infuriating thing was that the neighboring table called for the bill 5 minutes later, and their waiter accepted payment by credit card with nary a protest! I was so pissed that I was determined to take the effort to write this post as a cautionary tale to everyone else!

The first couple I let it pass thinking it might have been clerical errors, but after a while, I realized that there was a pattern. They like to prey on tables with groups of friends, often tipsy, and usually not too rigorous when checking the bill.

Thurs Night Films on Music: The Mars Volta Live @ The Electric Ballroom, London

Rain Dogs Bar & Gallery, Bangkok

23 July 8.30pm

The Music

On 'De-loused in the Comatorium,' the Mars Volta approach rock & roll like it's an ascetic discipline, a calling that comes with lyric sheets as dense and impenetrable as the Kabbalah and a ritual of worship that's dervish-like in its intensity. Formed by vocalist Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriguez after the demise of their former band -- Texan hardcore legends At the Drive-In, who splintered acrimoniously in 2001 -- the Volta are an unashamedly progressive outfit, dealing in grandiose arrangements that come on like Led Zeppelin fired through Saturn's rings. -- Louis Pattison

Known for their lengthy, inspired stage shows, The Mars Volta careen from Zeppelin-inspired riff rock to free jazz, salsa grooves and punk funk a la early Red Hot Chili Peppers (guitarist John Frusciante appeared on several tracks on Volta's user-friendly 2005 album, Frances The Mute). Critics have celebrated the band as the rebirth of prog rock, based mainly on impressions of De-Loused in the Comatorium (2002), which featured a lavish display of layered guitars, complex time signatures and serpentine vocals. --The Magazine

The Film

The silhouettes of two pulsating afros are accidentally projected onto the ceiling by the stage lighting, onstage below a man with huge hair grabs one such giant stage light – that’s a massive 500w spot-light thing incidentally, we're not talking about table lamps - and starts swinging it round the place like an Olympic hammer thrower going for gold, how he gets away with this without getting flattened by security is frankly confusing, more pertinently, how he got through customs at Heathrow with that haircut is a similar mystery. This is of course The Mars Volta, El Paso, Texas's own post-At The Drive-In prog-hardcore heroes and they don't let anything rest for a second.

The fearsome opening salvo of "Son et Lumiere," "Inertiatic Esp" and "Roulette Dares” from their astonishingly ambitious De-Loused in The Comatorium is nothing short of completely overpowering. Cedric - never the calm one, it must be said – flies about the stage like an electric eel on crystal meth, somehow managing to steer clear of Omar's flying guitar, and once again, just for the record that hair is simply incredible. Even the recent loss of off stage sound manipulator Jeremy Ward hasn't managed to dampen their furious and complex live sound, songs start as a blast of tightly constructed hardcore before turning as is from nowhere into extended jams of the like not heard since Zeppelin were striding the planet, then just when it seems like its gone too far, they bring it all together again into a huge chorus.

Seems the best of times to check the place up. Might go there as well, btu haven't been out for so long, that I feel a bit shy to get there by myself.

Could pick you up on my motorcycle if you're not too far ! :D

PM me tomorrow if you wish :D

Handsome Furs

Live in Bangkok.

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Handsome Furs is comprised of husband/wife duo Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade and his wife Alexei Perry. They signed on to the legendary indie label Sub Pop Records in late 2006 and released their first full-length album Plague Park in 2007. Their follow up album Face Control has received rave reviews including an 8/10 from influential Pitchfork Media.

Handsome Fur’s music is a blend of Electro beats and synths combined with enormous punk and post-punk guitar sounds. There isn't a couple in indie rock that exudes more sexual energy than Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry with their smoking, skin-baring performances firing up venues around the world.

“Thumping, synth powered anthems” - Rolling Stone

“Gritty guitar and club beats with the energy of a sugar high six year-old” - Spin

“Handsome Furs make beautiful music both on and off the stage” - Nylon

“Clearly a match made in weirdo heaven – 8/10” - Pitchfork

Support acts for the night will be a live set from local electro duo De...Connextor and DJs Magic Muffin & Plan B on the decks.

Tickets are 600 Baht with 1 drink (Bring I.D.)

Advance tickets can be bought at:

Club Culture, Sri Ayudhaya Rd

Thursday Night Films On Music

METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER

Rain Dogs Bar & Gallery

Soi Phraya Phiren, Rama IV Rd.

Map

The film that redefines 'group therapy'

Directors: Joe Berlinger, Bruce Sinofsky

Released: 2004

With voyeuristic intensity, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster explores the intricate connections that are created, nurtured, and challenged between members of a long-lasting band. That this intimate odyssey of group therapy and self-discovery involves Metallica--the most successful heavy metal group of all time--is just one reason this film is so uniquely fascinating. Having proven their documentary skills with Brother's Keeper and Paradise Lost (which included Metallica in its soundtrack), filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky spent two years with Metallica as the band survived the defection of long-time bassist Jason Newsted, struggled to record St. Anger, and recruited $40,000-per-month "performance enhancement coach" Phil Towle to counsel members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett as they confronted alcoholism, creative obstacles, and themselves in an effort to determine the viability of Metallica's future. With sincere hope, honest discussion, and the hiring of new bassist Robert Trujillo, Metallica battle their personal and professional demons, showing the vulnerable side of a business that thrives on raging testosterone. The effort pays off for everyone involved, especially the fans: Like the ultimate backstage pass, Some Kind of Monster is a healing journey into the hard-beating heart of rock & roll. --Jeff Shannon

After the film:

Really? Green Day are coming? oooh.

I got drunk together with them after their set back in 1992 when they played a crowd of maybe 30 at that tiny youth-club in my home country on their first European Club-Tour....

VERY nice guys indeed....

unfortunately, they won't be able to attract a huge crowd here in Bangkok, unlike Malaysia, Indonesia, HongKong or Japan....

and 90% of those who would like to see them here, won't be able to, due so to the exorbitant prices of the tickets.....

The concerts of the Big Farang-Bands are only for the "HI-SO" here in Thailand......

but oh yeah, don't miss the BUZZCOCKS, it's less than 2 weeks from now !

I still can recite every single line of the lyrics of their first two albums.......

did u see them on their latest pics ? REALLY old men they are....... as are we :)

Now this is really neat! With Green Day coming over to BKK as well, I am getting less and less disillusioned! :D Am grabbing my tickets this weekend, but I have yet to catch the Films on Music nights at Rain Dogs!

just to remind you boys and girls (and B.O.F.'s such as me):

the BUZZCOCKS show is TONIGHT.

I am really worried they will play an almost empty house as no average Thai can afford to pay 800 Baht for a club-Gig.....

so the turnout will be 90% Farang plus 10% Thai-HiSo......

but nevertheless, don't miss that show.

I just checked their myspace-page ( myspace.com/buzzcocksofficial ) and they got enthusiastic comments from the Aussie-crowd, where they played earlier this week.....
