Is the only way to get high speed internet in your residence by signing a lengthy contract.Last time I had to have a Thai sign a 1 year contract with True to get it into my apartment and had to pay to break it.I want to pay month to month as I don't know where I will end up living long term.Does anyone know how to do this?get hooked up with a direct line not wireless quickly without signing longterm as a falang?a Thai?If not what service provider has the shortest contracts?

Best chance for this: WiFi

The reason for a (usually) 1 year minimum contract length is return on investment for the ISP.

Take all the equipment into account that is required for ADSL and calculate that back to the cost per connection. And then it's quite clear that expanding capacity is not interesting for an ISP if they start handing out short term contracts.

In general it takes about half a year to earn the investment costs back on a new adsl connection. After that it's making profits.

I have a joiphone linksys 4 port router.It allows free calls incoming and outgoing from the US and 9 other countries free to both parties.The catch is it's not wireless.It requires a direct line.I guess that will have to be part of my criteria for renting although most places a direct line internet isn't carried by the owner,I imagine those are few and far between.Let me ask if ISP providers will let you continue the existing contract allowing you to move to a different location(assuming they serve that particular area)?And what is the ISP provider that covers the largest area in Thailand.Thanks for your input

I would say search this forum.

There are several ISPs in Thailand, and most of the country is covered when it comes to dsl lines. Chances to get dsl are of course bigger if the area is densely populated. Next thing is the choice of ISP - in dense areas one usually has a choice, but for most rural areas there's only one choice most of the time.

If dsl is not available, IPstar or CDMA are the only choices, but your VoIP option won't work (at least not reliable using IPstar).
