Just trying to plan my trip down to Krabi from BKK and considering the total cost of train to Surat Thani and then Taxi to Krabi. I can't find out how much (roughly) a taxi would be from Surat Thani to Krabi (Ao Nang). Has anybody doen this journey recently? It's quite far, I think.

Thanks

It's some years since I've been to Surat but I don't recall seeing a proper Taxi, as in air con car like they have in BKK. They have tuk-tuk's and m/c "taxis"

You are right the journey to Krabi is quite long 2-3 hours on the bus and Ao Nang is a little bit further. I think a taxi would be seriously expensive.

How are you traveling from BKK, if by bus then you can get a big a/c bus from the Surat bus station or a minibus from any travel shop. If you go by train, the station is some way out of Surat, same thing big us or minibus easy-peasy.

these combo s make no sense at all. If you wan to go quick-fly into Krabi-use AirAsia for cheap flights, TG for service.

If you want the cheap overland-dont mess with train+bus combo-take a direct bus.

if you are hellbent on those over-prized trains-then take a bus onward-they will await you on arrival at the station-choice of big bus and minivan.

Thai provincial towns do not have taximeters like here in Bkk-or the few in Chmai and Phuket. that is either pe-arranged or find somene on the spot-as they have no returns -this will cost the double pric e per km-say 10/12 bt/km as a rough estimate-which will make the more costly as a flight from BKK

As "asanee" says flying is good option, but there is nothing wrong with overnight train. The first class aircon sleeper compartments quite nice and the cheaper second class are OK to also A/C.

Another alternative is take the overnight train to Trang then minibus to Ao Nang. I think there may be a boat service from Trang but am not sure about this, maybe I just dreamed about it. :o

K.K. Tours right opposite Trang train station they'll take you where ever you want to go.

If you reach Suratthani on the overnight train from Bangkok and you hav'nt got a bus ticket for your destination from there, simply walk across and into one of the few restaurant place and buy one. I bought my from the one with a yellow sunshade. These few coffeeshops here double as ticket agencies and they're open as early as 4.00 am, remember not to buy anything from the approaches as you got off the train, these rascals introduce themselves as tourist guide and will surprice you with some english that lead you into a conversation before selling you a receipt which they write in front of you, unlike a proper printed-out ticket you can tell the descriptions are hand written, beware not only it's overpriced you find some othe problems as well. Never make a deal on the street, talk about the ticket only when you're seated, atleast the coffeshop operators are your witness and the shop is always there for you to pin point and also remember to buy only that one ticket , if you're going to the island it should come with the boat, do not pay for a saperate transfer then on, say from pier upon reaching island to......or from bus station in Phuket to.........hotels ,bungalows ect...better not then to have surprice.Keep your money in your wallet tight and make a deal when you reach there, transport are readily everywhere where bus , boat arrive. Stay away from these friendly opportunist preying on you on the streets as soon as you got off the train, you'll be lucky to spent a cup of coffee before making a deal.

Best regards to fellow tourist.
