su-b-doo
Last month I took my daughter to the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital for her immunization injections which cost 1,800 Baht; I was told she must have the same injection again next month. I returned and saw the same doctor for the same 10 second chat, the same nurse that gave the last injection; but when I went to pay the cost was 2,500 Baht. I questioned this and showed them last months invoice; they charged 650 for the doctor 300 baht more and another 400 baht more for the drugs. I refused to pay the extra; and after great discussion they discounted the invoice to the same price as last months. They then stated next time asks the price before you come. I was very angry and told them you can not cheat the people by just charging what you think. I assume the doctor gets a % of what they charge, and I know very well they double the cost of drugs. I also assume most people will never question their cost, but for me this kind of cheating is a disgrace and needs attention. I am sure I am not the only person that have been cheated, but to what extent are they cheating?
Owain
I am sure I am not the only person that have been cheated, but to what extent are they cheating? They are not cheating. They can charge you what they want for their services, that is the capitalist way. Everyone does it. As they told you you should have asked how much if you were so concerned about the price. 2500 baht is cheap for private hospital treatment. If I go into a reputable shop they display the price; therefore I would know if the price has changed. Considering I was receiving the same service and was not informed of any change in the notice to attend or the text message or when I reported at the front desk or when I reported to the kids unit or when I saw the doctor; I had no reason to ask had they increased their price. They can charge you what they want for their services, that is the capitalist way. Everyone does it. As they told you you should have asked how much if you were so concerned about the price. 2500 baht is cheap for private hospital treatment. Wrong. I tried asking the price for certain medical treatments before hand at several hospitals, each one told me that it is not possible to give a price until the Doctor has examined me and assessed what drugs and treatment is required. Which of course does make sense and fully understand why prices cannot be given until the patient has been examined. I have always been suspicious that some hospitals in Thailand have a two way pricing policy for Thais and Farangs, that is if the Thai goes fully private not including any Government health schemes. A year ago I came down with a very bad influenza. I visited the Ram 1 hospital in Chiang Mai. They tried to charge me, 2800 baht for some anti biotics and a nasal spray. I said, no thank you. Went into the town and bought the same products for 280 baht. Edited February 22, 2009 by sassienie

Westerner
I always use Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, wouldn't go anywhere else as I find the doctors there are first class. The medication is expensive but you don't need to buy it from there. If you ask the doctor he/she will write down what medication you need and you can then purchase it from Fascino at a much cheaper price.

Heng
And the great news is that the Bangkok Hospital group is slowly but surely buying up several local private hospitals.... BNH, Samitivej and Vejthani are a few on their list and their huge cash reserves thanks to hundreds of thousands of patients like the OP suggest that they will only get bigger. Pretty solid business formula if you ask me. Just about everyone has to pass through hospitals sooner or later... and typically at junctions in your life where you are the least picky about a few Baht here and there. No cut back on the medical standards but just providing good value for money for accommodation and ancillary services and start off small as a boutique clinic. If people are prepared to entrust their lives flying with a company like Air Asia just to save a bit of money, believing they have the same standard of pilots as other mainstream airlines, why would it be any different with a cut price hospital? Doctors in Thailand are paid very low salaries so it wouldn't be difficult to find some of the best in the country. I have now heard so many complaints about Bangkok hospital that it's obvious it's just become a money hungry corporation with the arrogant belief no one could effectively compete with it. Fundamental lack of understanding. Look at this: most of BKK Pattaya Hospital patients are insured with some insurance company, international or local. Those companies have their rules and price ranges they would refund. Anything above that level - they will refuse, on repeat they will request their customers not to use BKK Pattaya hospital - and that is the end of their business. OK now? My first visit ever to the international hospital was funny.... Man asked do you have insurance and I answered no... he pulled out a book and showed me the room rates (felt like I was in a hotel lobby, not the ER)... Then I said wait I do have insurance he said oh sorry I show you wrong book.... he proceeds to show me the insurace book, same rooms only the rates were 3* as much as the no-insurance book..
