Border Run

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have never done a border run before but may well have to do so in a few weeks. I am here on a tourist visa (originally 60 extended to 90 days).

I have gleaned bits from the forum but would appreciate any firther information:

1. Laos (Viantiane...sp?) sems to be a popular option. Is it the most convenient from Bangkok? (I know there are some holidays this month too)

2. Do I hop on a bus at Ekkamai or is it more complex than that? Do I need to go to a travel agency?

3. I would ideally like to get another 60 day tourist Visa...I have been informed this is possible (?). Does anyone have experience of going to the Thai embassy in Laos and doing this? Is it very time consuming? tricky?

4. And...depending on the above can it all be done in a day...does it need an overnight?

5. Oh, lastly, I may ask my Thai gf to come....is it easy for Thais to enter Laos if they have their passport. I expect so but better check first.

Thanks.

OK ...

Start with terminology ---

You want to go get a new Visa not make a border run.

Vientienne is easy. I would suggest the sleeper train from HuaLomphong Train station. There are plenty of reports on it. It is easy to do and your GF can come along.

My one recommendation would be to go grab a Lao visa here in BKK, saves time in the sun waiting on a visa for Laos at the border.

On this point, no problem at all. She won't need a visa either. Some border crossings sometimes charge a 20 Baht or so "entrance fee" or some-such - but last time I went with my Thai wife and son we didn't have to pay this (but we didn't cross at the border you'll be likely to cross at).
