This was recently announced...

On the Bangkok route, Gulf Air will deploy the new B777 for its daily GF151/152 service, from 8 April. The A330-200 will also be used for the four-weekly service GF158/159. In addition, from 1 July until 24 October, GF158/159 will go daily. Until 7 April, all Gulf Air flights are operated by A340s

I wonder if they will keep their relatively cheap fares in lieu of these fleet upgrades?

Why not?

The new planes are there for exactly 1 reason - they are cheaper to run (more fuel and crew efficient).

On the face that makes sense, but don't forget that those new planes need to be paid for.

They are leased, just as the old ones...

split hairs if you want, but leasing (wet or dry) new 777s / a330s or paying for the 787s they have on order is not the same as running first gen a340s and a320s ex SQ that are older than my wife.

Don't forget new maintenence procedures, similators and all the little things that add to the costs. Just would be surprised if they remain so cheap vis-a-vis their competitors.
