Hello

I have to travel to mae sot for a visit and borde crossing in the same time, can you help in finding the best way to reach there without flying... what are the different alternatives for travelling there?

Do I have to book a ticket in advance?

Thank you for your help,

Mathieu

Besides flying there is the bus. You can choose between morning busses and night busses. Busses leave from Mo Chit daily. The trip takes about 4 hours and the bus station is just outside Mae Sod. Booking a ticket in advance is not necesarry, unless you want to travel around songkran.

Morning busses leave at 7:30 and 8:00, you have night busses at 21:30, 22:00 and 22:30.

(Probably some other times too, but these I know for sure).

Previous poster mis-wrote. Bus is about 7 hours. The evening buses arrive early the next morning. The evening buses are all good- I agree about not needing to book ahead, but you should still try getting there a few hours early if you are traveling on a Sunday- and remember that after this weekend, it pretty much counts as Songkran. If you are not a Thai speaker, you will need to go out to the station to book ahead. Price is about 400 Bt.

From the Bus Station into town you will see motorcycle taxis and tuk-tuks. Price varies, but can be 60+ baht, and the station is too far to walk (about 5 km).

Make sure your passport is readily available, as there is a checkpoint right before town, and they may ask to see it.
