Report Vietnam Envoy Praises Phuket, Seeks Cooperation
Picture courtesy of The Phuket News In a strategic move to enhance tourism and trade links, Vietnam's Ambassador to Thailand, Pham Viet Hung, met with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat in a high-profile visit yesterday. The meeting, held at Phuket Provincial Hall, focused on nurturing cultural and economic ties, with discussions on potential sister-city agreements, drawing inspiration from Phuket's thriving tourism model. Yesterday's gathering, held at 2:30 p.m., highlighted the mutual interest in fostering deeper connections between these Southeast Asian neighbours. Ambassador Pham lauded Phuket's economic growth driven by tourism and smart urban planning as an exemplary model for Vietnam to consider. The Vietnamese delegation, which was received by key figures such as Phuket's TAT Director Siriwan Siharat and Phuket Tourist Association President Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, emphasised cultural and economic synergies. Ambassador Pham highlighted the shared history between the two countries and mentioned the recent high-level visits by the Thai prime minister to Vietnam as a foundation for future collaboration. Governor Sophon expressed keen interest in developing stronger ties, particularly given the presence of over 700 Vietnamese nationals in Phuket, who are integral to the community. Governor Sophon welcomed the idea of knowledge exchange and forming sister-city relationships, acknowledging that these initiatives could boost tourism and economic growth. The meeting underscored the importance of people-to-people interactions and increasing tourism between Vietnam and Phuket. The discussions involved shared initiatives in sustainable urban development and the exploration of investment opportunities, as reported by The Phuket News. With both Phuket and Vietnam experiencing rapid growth in the tourism and urban sectors, this visit marks a pivotal step towards formal cooperation. Plans for potential memoranda of understanding, business exchanges, and city partnerships signify an exciting new phase in Thai-Vietnamese relations. Crime Over 40 Arrested as Police Raid Gambling Dens in Bangkok
Picture courtesy of Matichon. More than 40 people have been arrested in two separate police raids on illegal gambling operations in Bangkok’s Bang Bon district, following complaints from local residents. At around 22:00 on 30 July, officers from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) and Bang Khun Thian Police Station raided a townhouse in Soi Kamnan Maen 7, Khlong Bang Phran subdistrict. The operation followed reports of loud noise and suspicions that the property was being used as an illegal casino. Initially unable to enter through the front, police approached the property from the rear and found 28 individuals on the second floor actively playing kao kae (a Thai card game). Officers immediately identified themselves and placed all suspects under arrest. Among the 28 gamblers were 4 men and 24 women. Seized items included: • 18 card push sticks • 2 decks of playing cards • Cash totalling 19,940 baht • 2 plastic money baskets and 1 money container • 20 money clips All suspects were taken to Bang Khun Thian Police Station for legal processing. Ms Duangpee, aged 55, was charged with organising illegal gambling for financial gain. The remaining 27 individuals were charged with participating in unlawful gambling. In a separate operation at 01:00 on 31 July, Deputy Superintendent Pol. Lt. Col. Kittipat Kaewsang-ang and investigators from Bang Khun Thian Police raided a makeshift shelter at the Morakot Intersection, off Soi Ekachai 46, after receiving a tip-off about illegal hi-lo (dice) gambling. Fourteen people were caught in the act, 12 men and 2 women. Officers confiscated one dice set, three dice, a betting score sheet and cash. All suspects and evidence were taken to Bang Khun Thian Police Station, where they were charged with engaging in illegal gambling (hi-lo) for financial gain. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on underground gambling operations, which they say continue to disrupt communities and contribute to wider criminal networks.
