If a dog disappears than it is totally the responsibility of the owner.

My 2 dogs are never allowed to roam outside of my property.

There is a 2 metre brick wall bordering my land and a main gate.

The dogs are considered as part of the family, they live indoors and have full run of my property.

People who are not 100% committed to the welfare of their pets, should not own them.

You should not own dogs or have children. They are part of your family, yet you threat them like slaves?

This is one of the countries where your dogs CAN go roam around in the neighborhood sort of legally and eat off all the trash that thais love to put on the street for the wind to take away in everyone else's front yard. that makes your dog happy and free and does not bother anyone if you raised your dogs right.

I was away for a week and shortly after coming home noticed our dog wasn't around. I asked the wife and was told that a few days ago some men had come around and asked her if she'd sell it for 300 baht. These men go around the area buying up dogs to sell in Sakon Nakhon, where they are eaten. Big black dogs being highly prized because "they make you strong". They come around about every 6 months in a truck with a cage on the back full of mostly mangey, hairless dogs, that I hope makes whoever eats them very sick. Anyway, our dog mysteriously disappeared the following night. It wasn't a special breed or anything, just a regular black dog that we'd raised from a pup, but it was a nice intelligent dog. I still haven't decided what I'll do when they come around next. I'm not stupid enough to do something myself, but I think they'll have a nice welcoming committee of my farm workers when we hear they're back in the district.

Had 2 beautiful (oversized) male cat's,

a buildingsite was started next door, "compliments" about the cats

from the workers and what I thought a bit of an jealous look...

the day after their farewell aprty, when the building was finished -

job done, both of the big male cats disappeared for ever!

The problem was, because of them been neutered, they were very friendly with anyone!

It's not imagination, the employees sort of ALL hinted towards the possibility blaming the people

from "Baan No:rk, Baan No:rk" for their disappearance!

I can't believe that anyone would advocate allowing your dogs to roam the streets eating trash as the "right way to raise a dog". :o

Guess children should also be allowed to wander around in the street and eat out of the trash...?

Do rabbits have the same emotional bond with human beings? I don't think so. If you don't understand the difference between a domesticated animal who cries outside of your door and gets so excited that he pees himself when he sees you and a cow or a gerbal which is completely indifferent to your existence, I can't help you.

Rabbit and Gerbil are both "domesticated animals":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_domesticated_animals

http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Li...ticated_animals

Many people own rabbits as pets and feel the same way that dog or cat owners feel about their pet.

Case in point:

http://www.pet-rabbit-care-information.com...on-articles.htm

http://www.bunnyrabbit.com/price/pet_rabbit.htm

As a result of the domestication process, the dog developed a sophisticated intelligence that includes unparalleled social cognition and a simple theory of mind

i've never had a rabbit. my understanding is that they just sit in a cage and that's it.

i think you should stick to your sexpat related post instead of posting that you'd prefer having rats eating the leftover rice from thai in the street than nice and clean dogs.

Totaly agree, even though i feel somewhat sorry for the op.I have chosen not to have a dog as i dont live in the right area to take it for a walk, and give it a good life. One day when i live more on the outskirts of town i will have one or two but always always look after them and dont allow the to roam,as this could give them disease, get killed by car etc etc.

Your'e talking drivel IMHO

Yes free to aimlessly wander into the roads causing accidents etc, oh well as long as the dog's happy. I'd say Sassenie is being a responsible owner.

A point of interest....when sitting on the beach in Samui with the beach vendors constantly walking up and down, occasionally a vendor would walk past and all the beach dogs would go mad, barking at and chasing the person away.

Apparently once someone has eaten dog a certain smell omits from ones pores and other dogs can detect this and take an instant dislike to that person.

I have heard this from many sources and having witnessed the dogs behaviour myself on many occasions I tend to believe the story.

interesting point there somewhere....same with cats, sometimes a person walks in or by and they instantly behave very strange... looking for shelter, a hideaway.. as if... ah well, interesting opinions aired here, some very human, some very, ah well...as long as it does concern someone else - everybody has a soft spot - for some it's only their hardware, like a scratch in the new car, a smashed window.... or a graffiti on the newly painted house, I don't want to go any deeper and more personal - but everything is possible and nobody is immune to some sort of damage it always depends, which button is pressed!

What's your obsession with "sexpats"? You sound about 10 years old? And obviously never been to Thailand if you think the wandering dogs eating out of the trash are "nice and clean". I'd no sooner touch a trash eating dog, than a trash eating rat.

LOL, have you have studied the use of references? You can't just use random references defining words to validate a point.

Magic Monkeys often fly from Mars to Earth in special Spaceships.

(i have references it must be true)

If you want to support your statement you'd want to have a reference (such as article or study) related specifically to "As a result of the domestication process, the dog developed a sophisticated intelligence".

Which also studied similar domesticated animals (such as rabbits or gerbil) and found they have not developed the same sophisticated intelligence.

If you live anywhere near Sakhon Nakorn you've gotta keep any pet secure at night. In that area I followed two trucks full to the brim with dogs going on their journey. Other dogs on the roadside would be barking and running after the trucks as they zoomed by. It was quite disturbing really and only later did I know that had I called the police they might have done something about it IF the trucks entered their jurisdiction only.

It's easy to say "the strays are a pain, good riddance, eat them up", but these dogs are basically crushed in the vans for hours on their way to a backyard slaughterhouse where they're either stabbed in the throat or hung, and they know what's going to happen. If you think it's like a chicken being killed think again...youtube it.

To the OP, the police have a duty to arrest the thieves, but if they're just drivers/sellers there's no proof - but they will impound their vehicles. By being a foreigner and mentioning damning worldwide reports on this practice in the media I have it on good authority (by a policeman in the family from that area) that they will be that bit more serious.

I once joked with a doctor friend in the UK about having eaten dog accidentally in China. Even with farm rearing as in Korea, it is incredibly dangerous meat to eat. Can apparently catch something akin to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

Nicking pets, what has this country come to.

Dogs get stolen everywhere, however as there are so many strays it makes me wonder why these arent rounded up and disposed of, i love dogs ( or should i say, used to ) but they really are out of control in thailand, ive been bitten, chased, had my car scratched by them.i think its obvious which is a pet and which isnt,..id be all for putting down the sick strays and biters ,.but this is thailand and we wont change anything,.if they eat them and there is no law against it then so be it,and to answer an earlier question ,i think they dont eat city dogs for the same reason they dont eat city rat, they are" dirty",. :o

In Viet Nam and Korea they eat dogs and don't have any problems with strays causing road accidents, mangy soi dogs spreading disease or barking all night.

So by that reasoning, should we be eating all the awful drivers causing traffic casulaties since they are the number 1 cause of all auto related accidents?

Posted
Seems weird they'd need to steal/buy family pets when the streets are crawling with strays.

P.S. Just because they like to eat dog, why does that make them "scum"...? I wouldn't personal eat dog, but if someone likes dogs, or cats, or rats or whatever that's doesn't mean they are scum....

It does in my book.

Dogs and cats are domesticated animals.

So what about people who eat rabbit - are they scum?

Do rabbits have the same emotional bond with human beings? I don't think so. Domestication makes no difference. Killing is killing. An animal feels fear and pain regardless of being domesticated or not. It doesn't matter if he recognizes or loves you, a non-domesticated animal will scream just as loudly as the domestic ones.

If a man kills a strange woman on the street at night, in the very end, does it matter if she recognized or liked him at all? No. She's dead all the same.

1) Why would they offer money for a dog they could steal?

2) How do you know that one of your "farm workers" isn't 300 baht richer now? :o
