Ajarn
Any suggestions for a higher-end hotel with all the comforts overlooking the Mekhong River at any point? I'm going for view, and total comfort and relaxation here. Also interested in a similar place on the Kwae River in Kanchanaburi... Thanks.
cdnvic
Isn't the a big hotel on the Burmese side near Mae Sai? To the NE of Tachielek right at the golden triangle. cv
bartender100
I stayed at a great place on the river Kwae.A little out of town, but if you have transport, pertfect. http://www.felixhotels.com/riverkwai/
Thetyim
Ban Boran is good. Its in Chiang Rai, near the golden Triangle. British owned I think. Nong Khai also has some nice places but definitely not high end.
Gazza
Try Nakhorn Phanom. Nice view of the karst mountains in Laos. There're two hotels within walking distance with similar sounding names. One is something like "The Maekhong River Grand View Hotel" and I think the other is "River Maekhong view Hotel". This latter one is newer and both are on the road that leads to That Phanom. The latter being the one closest to That Phanom. I stayed here about 2 years ago and was good for the 900b per night.

Anyway, can definitly recommend it although wouldn't exactly call it higher-end. We stayed there about 1 year ago and paid 900 baht per night, the superior rooms were 1800 baht per night but our room was spot on. Rear of hotel overlooking pool, Mekong and Laos. Good restaurant, although a/b was the plasticy type you get everywhere. The night we stayed they had a really good singer in the lounge. Only one problem, not much to do in that area. I've also found a few gems over the years in not-so-popular areas. 'Nothing to do' is quite okay with me. What about Mukdahan, and further up the river? I remember Mukdahan as quite a nice little place a few years ago.
n7zrd
Chiang Kong- Good views right on the river, no real hotels but some decent guest houses. (Bamboo House) North of Chiang Saen, Sop Ruak, Golden Triangle (GT) has The Imperial, nice hotel with a perfect view of the river. North 2 km. Anantara ( formerly Baan Boran) Thai company, MINOR Grp. very good views and luxerous, but 5 star high end. 1 km. out of GT the Paradise Resort, on the Burmese side but Thai owned. No passports stamped, a bit different as there is a not highly used Casino there but its definantly right on the river. Further north near Mai Sai are a few others but not along the river. Gazza
Mukdahan is kind of so-so with me. Stayed in "Ploy Palace Hotel" the night before I stayed in NKP. Can't recall the price but if it was over 1,000b then I would have sought out somewhere else to stay. I would guess it to be around 800-900b. They have a rooftop restaurant (12-15 floors). Scenery of Laos is flat. Muk has a view tower/museum that gives a nice panoramic view. Elevator was out of order and had to walk to the top and it knackered me up good style but it's well worth paying it a visit.
COBBER
Regarding Nakorn Phanom, Both of these hotels mentioned have excellant views of the Meekong River. In the one closest to town a room with a view is about 800 baht per night but this hotel is ageing a bit and has no heating. It's very cold this time of the year once the sun goes down. About 1 k/m down the road heading out of town is the other hotel mentioned which is definately the better of the two but hardly 5 star. If you want a river view you have to take one of the more expensive rooms which will set you back about 2000 baht per night. Also one big problem is the noise coming from the Lao side of the river when they have Rock Bands playing until 4 am . This seems to be a regular event and there is nothing the Thai authorities can do about it.
ProfessorFart
I really like Khong Jiam (which is good for visits to Pa Dtem NP) It has beautiful views across the river into Laos (and you can cross on a day permit as well) Theres one or two Resort type places there the Tohsang Khongjiam being the best. Bluffer
North of Chiang Saen, Sop Ruak, Golden Triangle (GT) has The Imperial, nice hotel with a perfect view of the river. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, can confirm that. Although if the level is low, the mighty mekong does look fairly wimpish. And it is actually the only hotel ( as far as I know ) that you can see Burma, Laos & Thailand from. But not a lot to do unless you have transport or go on tours. Unless you count the casino in Burma.
