Hyphen And Underscore In Spoken Email Addresses

Featured Replies

A Thai person called me this morning and told me his email address. He spelt his address out as eg:

'S O M C H A I BORLAN T A T at hotmail.com'

I understood him fine when he spelt out the letters of his email address, but was thrown by the word 'BORLAN' (or somthing like that) that he used in the middle of the address.

I can only think it is a Thai word which means 'hyphen' or 'underscore', so that his email address is [email protected] or [email protected]

Does anyone recognise this Thai word? something like borlan or rorlan. Maybe he was trying to say the English word 'hyphen'.

Simon

It could be his last name / name of his shop ,place as it is not the Thai word for hyphen or underscore.

In my experience, educated Thai people use the English word "underscore"; otherwise, they say ขีดใต้ (keed tai). Hyphen is always called ขีด (keed). Neither of these are anything like "(b|r)orlan".
