Following the recent demonstrations and summits - and given Samui's location and flights direct to HK , Singapore etc -

Wouldn't it make sense for the Thai leaders to create a safe and secure place to show off Thailand in the future . Samui with relatively little investment in roads and infrastructure could be made 'The Monte Carlo' or Jewel of Thailand - Safe , secure and beautiful ?

Good , restaurants , beautiful beaches and great climate .

and while their at it make it duty free as was proposed for Phuket ?

Have you ever been to Monte Carlo??

Koh Samui is the last place in Thailand, which could represent the country - after Koh Phanghan.

I was not suggesting at this time but after considerable investment in roads and infrastructure - If you read my post .

Many Thai (visitors) don't consider the 2 islands as Thailand they know. They consider KPG and KS the most Farang style and Farang present places in the whole country. Even more than HKT...!

In both places, PTY and HKT Farangs are just a group of many to be present. There are much more Asians than Farangs.

Pattaya is a big Thai city with a Nakhon status since years. Phuket is a province with a real Thai city and way more Asian tourists than from the West.

Contrary to Samui and Phangan. Here the expat population as well as the major tourist income is from the West. Everything here is made to western tastes. Not so in PTY and HKT.

I think the OP means that the ASEAN meting should have been on Koh Samui rather than in Pattaya.

Here they can control who gets on the Island (and off).

well on kpg i haven't seen mc donalds, pizza hut, pizza company, kfc or bowling , cinema's, go karting etc. all of this they have in pattaya and phuket so i still think they are way more touristy and have a lrger expat com. then kpg, it is slowly comming on kpg

Maybe similar reasons like in Phuket:

"The Japanese have been most sensitive with the security of their leader. Earlier when they learned that the Thai authorities would like to organise the Asean Plus Three Summit in Phuket, the Japanese were not happy. Since Phuket is an island, it would be rather difficult to move the Japanese leadership including more than 100 press members out of Phuket in the event of an airport ambush by the Red Shirt protesters. The Japanese authorities were more comfortable with the Pattaya venue"
