After calling yesterday to have caller id activated on my line, and faxing passport, yada yada, they call me back today to tell me that caller id is not available in my area, and they are so sorry.

Has anyone ever heard of this before in Bangkok?

True have told me (and they were adamant) in the not too distant past that neither internet nor UBC (from True) are available in my building (they are and I'm using them right now - both provided by True), so I can't say I'm entirely surprised by this. Do you have some kind of rep from True that deals with your building? This is probably your best bet.
