Thanks, Meadish; is the liquor fermented or distilled? It is interesting that the customs people chose to prohibit its entry based on the Endangered Species Act, rather than on prohibition on untaxed liquor.

Wouldn't เหล้าดองงูเห่า make more stress on that it's liquor with cobra, not cobra in liquor?

It's actually both of those things -- liquor with cobra, and cobra in liquor.

Google turns up equal hits for เหล้าดองงู and งูดองเหล้า. Perhaps the usage depends on how you're talking about it. The "product" name makes more sense with เหล้า in front, because you're emphasizing that it's liquor, since the liquor is what they're ultimately buying. If you're talking more about the snakes, and the weird practice of putting snakes in liquor, then งูดองเหล้า "liquor-pickled snake" makes sense, too.

This Pantip thread (with lots of large pictures) calls it เหล้าดองงู in the thread title. But note that commenter #12 says it's called งูดองเหล้า, not the other way around. I think the usage probably just varies, rather than there being one "correct" way to say it. ;P

This is the first time I've seen this. Bizarre...

I had heard about this nice little thingey long before I even came to Thailand, and I finally saw it, when we went to Chiang Rai, at ดอนซาว on Lao side of Mekong there were whole lots of them for sale. Creepy thing though, I had to wrap it very tightly when I put it in my suitcase - just because of the feeling that I have a nice little Naga with sharp little fangs beside me.

From reading a few threads, it's mainly the bile of the cobra that is claimed to have all those beneficial medical qualities.

I am not sure that there are any absolute standards in the practice of preparing the beverage.

From what I've understood about other types of เหล้าดอง/ยาดอง many types of liquor can be used, in the country side most commonly some type of เหล้าขาว, but I know people who have used whisky and Sang Som as well.

I believe that this is one of the many so called medicines derived from mixing different things in Rice whiskey.

It's supposed to be good for the health, muscles and the Thai equivalent of Viagra (aren't they all :) )

I think it's called something like จงอางยาดอง

And this one would be ยาบำรุงกาม/ยาบำรุงกำลังทางเพศ :D or in spoken just ยาบำรุง - one of my favorite tools to start a good laugh with my Thai friends.

  • 1 year later...

I was looking for that also and got my Snake wine shipped from a website ( http://www.asiansnakewine.com ) within few days, in case it can help you with fertility also :-)
