Mae Sai customs intensify screening to prevent smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol

CHIANG RAI: -- Customs office in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district has increased its checks on people to prevent smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol after the government decided to raise tax on both goods.

Customs chief Pajonsak Krongchom said on Tuesday that his office has intensified its screening on Thais who returned from Burma to make sure they did not bring in cigarettes and alcohol, more than limits allowed by the law.

The authorities searched all vehicles and people by using x-ray machine.

The government had approved an excise tax increase on beer and other alcoholic drinks to 9 percent from 7 percent in a bid to boost government revenue amid global economic slowdown.
