Getting A Visa In Exchange For Ngo Work ?

Featured Replies

I'm going to mix altruism with self serving-ism.

Does anyone know of any NGOs / charities / support organisations that operate in the Bangkok area who would offer some kind of visa sponsorship in exchange for (free/paid) work. I'd like to stay in Bangkok for a year or so, and this might be a worthwhile way to spend some of my time.

I can go the teaching english route, I have a masters and TEFL, but I'm going to see if there is NGO work.

Why are you asking about sponsership for a visa ?, think its the work permit you are talking about...not the same thing..

Hi, terminology aside I am just after info on any NGOs that will grant a visa / work permit for work so I can stay in Thailand, preferably an NGO that operates in Bangkok. Do you know of any ? I won't mind doing work for them if it's a worthwhile cause, and it is an alternative to teaching english. Thanks

Its actually not terminology, a visa and a work permit are two completely separate things, your best possibility is to come here and teach English first and then explore any possiblities with NGO's

go to www.reliefweb.int , click on countries and you will find an org looking for volunteer teachers. Good luck.

As been said above, for volunteer work you would need a work permit. With a work permit you would be able to get an extension for 1 year from immigration. But you need to get a non-immigrant visa first, which you can get with a letter from the organisation you will be working with. Documents needed depends on where you apply for the visa. In western countries it is often simply a letter from the organisation.

There are many NGO's in Thailand and Bangkok. You will have to make sure that they will assist you with getting a WP. A lot of organisations won't do that, as they simply don't know how to do it.

When I looked into this about a year ago the deal was: extension of a non-B visa for work with an NGO in Bangkok required a minimum salary of 55,000 baht a month (if US citizen). Not sure about requirements for other nationalities, other locations, or other types of extensions.

I'm sorry, the information you received was wrong. When you apply for a visa based on volunteering you would get a non-immigrant "O" visa.

For an extension of stay based on volunteering there is no income requirement. The mimimum income requirement for an US citizen based on working would be 50,000 a month.

Agree there is no income requirement but you do need a Work Permit. Even if working for free.

Extension Rules. 2.21 is for volunteering.
