A couple of former teaching colleagues of mine received a full tax refund after they completed their two-year contract and left the country. They are British nationals and apparently, the conditions for refund were that they taught no more than 2 years and would never teach again in Thailand. I am wondering whether to apply but am not sure that I want to leave Thailand for good. I would like to know if it is possible to do another type of work (other than teaching) after having had a tax refund (seems unlikely but wanted to check). I have found it impossible to get official information on which to base my decision, the local tax office not even being aware that a full refund was a possibility. (The application went through our employer.) Does anyone know how I could find out more?

What do the british say??..... "Not bloody likely!"

Basically if you earn an income, you must pay tax. If you've paid more tax in a single year than was required, then you submit tax forms and documents to claim a refund. Either your company has paid tax to the revenue department on your behalf, or they did not. I suspect they've told you something that's not true. The revenue department is not going to let workers get away from paying tax and I don't think they'd really care if you left the country or stayed on and worked for another company.
