It was recommended that males over 50yrs old should take 1 junior Aspirin a day to help keep the blood thin ie preventative for blood clots.

I have been informed by Pharmacists the the Government have stopped the sale of Aspirin as it is classed as a dangerous drug and can only be prescribed by a doctor ?

Any input on the subject

That "Tan Jai" stuff that they sell is aspirin. It's in powdered form though, so not very convenient to take.

How hard is it to break a 300mg Aspirin by 3. :)

Although I am not sure everyone should take the Aspirin, since it will be easy to get hematoma

Cardiprin 100mg is the one to use. Still available everywhere - Fascino chemists. I doubt whether this story has real cred. - sounds more like drug company rivalry. After all if aspirin does help keep BP low and your heart healthier, that's not so good for sales of other drugs. Sorry to be so into conspiracy theories, but I've heard this tale before.

Baby Asprin here sells under the name of Aspent, 65 mg, readily available at any pharmacy. Having said that, it is illegal for Pharmacies to sell Viagra and the like without prescription and the fines are heavy. But many of them do so I would guess that there's little chance of getting them to stop selling Asprin, if indeed that is the law these days which I would doubt.

Are you sure (a) it was an actual pharmacist you were talking to? and (:) that it was aspirin he was referring to?

AFAIK still available in multiple preparations and strengths in category NDD, which means it can be sold OTC even by non-pharmacists.

Well I tried 2 pharmacy but then you may have a point maybe the person selling was not a pharmacist, I am going to wait till I can get into boots in the City.

I have not seen aspirin on open display for many years. It was totally removed from sale when the news broke about problems with children in an immediate reaction and seems to be treated with high suspicions ever since.

I suspect if you request baby aspirin the immediate reaction of seller will be 'no'. Perhaps if you ask for aspirin for blood thinning they will be more likely to have it. I take but it is prescribed by a doctor and obtained in hospital pharmacy so have no recent experience buying OTC.

Ministry bans selling aspirin to treat children

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Ministry of Public Health Friday banned sales of aspirin for treatment of children under age 15 at grocery stores and drug stores to prevent any fatality which may be linked to this fever relief drug.

Public Health Minister Pinij Jarusombat said he met Friday with over 500 medical professionals, pharmacists, government officials, fresh market vendors and school staff from Nonthaburi Province on the outskirts of Bangkok to present policies to prevent the spread of bird flu.

The same measures would be implemented in other provinces, he said.

Mr. Pinij said he advised them not to give aspirin to children--especially to those under age 15.

Some patients who have had direct contact with poultry or live in areas where there are suspicious deaths of birds should see doctors who can determine whether they have contracted bird flu virus.

He asked local authorities to control grocery shops to follow the ministry's guidelines and to stop selling aspirin in its powdered form used for children.

Regarding vendors, he instructed them to keep their sales venues clean and not to sell fowls which died from unknown causes.

Meanwhile, Dr. Prat Boonyawongvirot, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, said coninuing bird flu lab tests around the country had not identified any new cases of avian influenza; so there are no new bird flu patients to report.

Regarding an earlier reported case of a 10-year-old Buddhist novice monk, suspected of having bird flu in the northern province of Uttaradit, had still been given the anti-viral drug oseltamivir used to treat bird flu in humans.

On the BBC today, research said that people should only take Aspirin if they have ALREADY had an MI (Myocardial Infarction) as studys have proved that taking Aspirin (even the small 35mg dose) can cause a stomach bleed.

Taking Aspirin before a long flight will not help prevent DVT nor will it stop you having your first Heart attack.

I cannot be assed to do the Google work, so look for yourselves.

I take 150mg a day plus 75mg Clopidogrel but then I have already had my MI. :)

I just bought 2 1000 count bottles of baby asperin yesterday with no problem at all. They are 65 grain aspirin tabs and I take two every day so have a good supply. I have always been able to buy baby asperin for all of the 10 years I have been here but it is not always available at all pharmacies. So check around to more than one and you will find it. The problem I have had is they tend to stock the smaller quantity bottles of like 30 tabs and it is inconvenient. So finding the 1000 count bottles at 300 baht was a welcome happening.

I buy cards of 10 500 mg Bayer aspirin at Boot's or Watson's in Pattaya. They are on open shelves. I cut them in half to get 20 250 mg pills. Usually lose two or three to a case of the crumbles while splitting.

Aspent or baby low doseage Aspirin ia available at most Chemists including those in big supermarkets .

Interested to know where to buy the big bottles though. I always stock up from Boots when I go to UK where the doesage is 75 mg though they will under strict rules allow you only to but one bottle at a time but you can keep going back every day....bit silly really but rules are rules

I attend the government hospital forthe diabetic clinic everycouple of months and they proscribe for me 300 mg asprin. I think the important thing when taking asprin you should eat first or drink a large milk

A pharmacist told me that they don't stock aspirine as there is little demand for it and the shelf live is short. A lot of stock would be expired before they could sell it.

I have read recently that the baby aspirin dose is insufficient so I take two or three of the 81mg. of aspirin a day now just as a preventative measure. I am not taking ginko or large doses of Vitamin E with aspirin as I have read that combination might lead to internal bleeding. I think there needs to be more research in this area.

I was taking 81 mg aspirin. It was prescribed by a doctor, but I asked for it at different pharmacies and had no problem getting it without evidence of a prescription.

But it is not without risks. I developed subretinal bleeding which puts pressure on the retina causing loss of central vision. Can get progressively worse and cause irreversible damage. Generally called Age Related Macular Degenration, but there are 101 varieties.

Took a dramatic change for the worse. I stopped the aspirin. Things got better. One eye is permanently damaged, although it seems to have stopped "degenerating." Aspirin does not cause the problem, but it does exacerbate it.

Like most risks, what I experienced doesn't apply to everyone, but a fair percentage of people over 60 do have some risk of developing either dry or wet macular degeneration. There is no cure although some treatments help slow down the progression of the disease. The most effective involves getting monthly injections of a cancer drug directly into the eyeball.

So you have to weigh the risk of stroke against other risks as you age. If you dislike getting injections in your arm or derriere, consider how much fun it would be to have a needle "plunged" into your eyeball. No, no general anesthetic is given. :)
