Got a friend coming back from a border run to Mae Sai who is stuck near Chiang Rai because of a protest blocking the road. Anyone know what's going on?

Answering my own post... :)

It's actually north of Chiang Rai on Highway 1 and they are protesting the government not buying enough of their rice or something like that. There's a couple hundred cars and they are only letting school buses, ambulances, and whoever they feel like through. Provincial buses are even being blocked.

Just got back and they have cut the road off around 30 km from Mae sae, near the army base checkpoint. There is a detor around the mountains which adds at least 50 minutes on the journey. not sure why the road is closed though as the signs were in Thai.
