How Not To Make Your Website Not Visible To Some People?

Not to be found by search engine crawlers is (maybe) easy - place a robots file in your web root

You might become unknown for the www...

Have your site accessed with a master password. Passwords you only give to visitors you allow to view the content of your site.

Consider something similar to your online banking log-in page

Talk to your webmaster.

You need to explain more about what groups you are trying to restrict access for.

* You can block all but permitted with a password.

* You can block by country with geotargeting such as GeoIP.

* You can block certain browsers or search engines with robots.txt or .htaccess or other options

* You will not be able to block by sex, age, or ethnic background.

thanks for the advice so far.

Basically would just like to advertise (by mail) to clients, and have them view the website where they can see an expanded portfolio if they wish, via the link I gave them. Would rather not have the website come up on an internet search.

The easiest way to do this is to password protect a private subdirectory or the entire site if you wish. Provide the password access in the mail. How to do this depends on who is hosting your site. They should be able to provide assistance or detailed instructions.

If you don't want to be indexed by the engines, but don't mind a client sending someone else to the site, just create a robots.txt file and put it in the root directory. In this manner you can block crawlers from crawling your site.

But if you want more solid security, the first option in the list is what you want.

Go to http://davidwalsh.name/web-development-tools and use the password generator... copy the result into a file called .htpasswd, then upload the file to the root directory of the site.

If the server is running on linux/unix, there is a very simple .htaccess you can use.

just google for it...really easy to use.
