angiud
I came here 9 years ago, with low money and I open a small business. After all this time, I have 3 good running restaurants, an happy wonderful family and quite everything I need. Said that, I have seen Thailand change a lot (in worst) in the last years. I don't talk about tourisn, business, etc, I talk about the country and the thais. So, my family and me, have taken the decision to go away and next year we shall go in Bali, to start again. I don't want to speak here how Bali is better, cheaper, quieter, more friendly, etc. (for me). Just say we don't feel happy anymore in Thailand. Just my contribute. duchovny
With all the current uncertainties: poor exchange rates, rising prices, high crime, anti farang centiment, police shakedowns, road chaos, poor service, agressive Thais, constant change in visa regs, uncertainty if you have any rights to your house - even if you bought it in your wifes name, etc. etc. etc. - - - -Are you close to throwing in the towel? What you say is unfortunately an accurate account of life in Thailand now. I moved on a couple of years ago to Cambodia and thoroughly enjoy it. MeetJohnDoe
So, my family and me, have taken the decision to go away and next year we shall go in Bali, to start again.I don't want to speak here how Bali is better, cheaper, quieter, more friendly, etc. (for me). Just say we don't feel happy anymore in Thailand. Bali is certainly beautiful and the people are great. However, for retirees and people not active in business, it certainly has its limitations (quality and sophisticated medical care for one). Also, unless you really take to the "beach bum" lifestyle, the boredom factor could be an issue again. Good luck with the resto...there are already lots of good places there so the competition will be stiff...hope you succeed.
MeetJohnDoe
If you have some money, the Philipines and even Manila can be a great place to live, great beaches, friendly people, lots of travel to do, casino's, gated communities, underground music scene, english language, less culture shock, better nightlife, great women, not xenophobic AND you can actually hire people that speak english. I agree and have said as much in the concurrently running thread Thailand vs. Philippines in the South East Asia sub-forum Medical care, transport infrastructure, and sanitation/hygiene and environmental pollution and degradation are major issues. Even with all that, Manila can be a fun town (Filipinas can be great) and some of the islands of the south are drop-dead georgeous.

So in Thailand, you have 3 successful restaurants, a happy wonderful family and everything you need, yet, you are throwing all in and blaming the country and the Thais? BALONEY! You are probably leaving because of your own failures. And that’s the same for many others who prefer to blame everyone else rather than themselves for their lack of success here. tommybkk
Hey Sassienie, I completely agree with you. To get honest respect you need to give it yourself in the first place. and to appreciate Thailand you got to love it in the first place. And yes money also plays a big role, got money? got it all here.

Gary A
For those who are moving along to greener pastures, good luck. If enough farangs go, maybe things will get better for those of us who remain. It must be difficult to live somewhere where you hate. No doubt your attitude offends the Thai people.

I disagree, ive moved around the world ,just out of boredom and fancying a change,im sure there are others, i personally think a lot of it for some is financial.or boredom as in my case, and not a lot for kids to do, but the biggest factor is where you came from and the quality of life you had there, i have fantastic memories of southern england where i come from, and i certainly will be back there one day,i just couldnt imagine for a minute being buried in thailand, unless its not planned ,. Birdman
Thailand is the best even if I have a home in St Tropez where most of you guys would walk on their heads for to have it. All the excitement at the beginning will fade away and than you can see, if you can handle the day by day life here, or if you have to compromise more as you actually want to, or if you will hate it. mmushr00m
"rising anti farang sentiments"???? huh?? 'cos they stop worshipping you and thinking farang is number 1 and always smart and correct and must be obeyed???? On the one hand whinge about hwat a lousy 3rd world country this is but when the natives start using their brains and exerting their rights to look after their self interest they become "hostile" and 'anti farang"??? Some of you guys need to grow up and see the world. See and experience what real anti (insert race/gender/religion/sexuality) sentiment is really like. What about the excitement of living in europe? When will that be gone? Honestly, the only excitement for me living in my home town in the south of france is the money I safe. Got the sun, sea, beautiful architecture and beautiful mountains. Nothing more, nothing less. Every farang needs to go home once in a while, but for me Thailand is the country where I will spend most of my time. Crushdepth
Not close at all. Thailand isn't particulary 'foreign friendly' but it hasn't gotten worse, at least not since I've been here (10 years).
tommybkk
But I have to admit that when I go to places where aren't many foreigners, the locals are much more friendly. How come?

That's why they packed their things already, mentally, but still have to wake up in the morning exposed to their torture of Thainess.
