Budget Accommodation In Phuket

Hi Guys.

This is a bit of a long shot but here goes.

After 10 years in Chiangmai, I'm starting to feel a bit landlocked and thinking of trying somewhere else.

I am just one 63 year old person with a very small dog who only barks if someone comes to the gate (which is good for security).

What are the chances of renting a small furnished house for under 10,000 Baht enclosed with a wall or fence (big enough to stop the dog getting out)? I know it doesn't sound a lot of money for Phuket, but that's all my retirement budget will allow and the house need only be one bedroom if its OK.

I have absolutely no idea of location the town would be OK....suggestions please.

I could possibly pay a year up front for the right deal.

Pleeease any help, advice, where not to live etc, greatly appreciated - or maybe you know someone who has a place to rent out.

Cheers :)

uptheos,

Don't worry. There are loads and loads of places like that available here now. Some for less especially if you pay up front like you say you can. I suggest you do what I did and don't choose anything right away. Spend a week house hunting and find something you really like. In the mean time there are lots of places you could stay with a dog for a week or two around 500 baht a day. There are tract houses betweeen Phuket town and Chalong that are all fenced like that, but if feeling landlocked means you don't want neighbors on every side of you then I recommend Karon, Kata, Rawai, or Nai harn beaches. Or maybe up north ner Kamala, Surin, Nai yarn or Bang tao Beaches. There is also the east side fo the island, like Cape Panwa. Some nice quiet areas there. Check the classafieds on ThaiVisa and Phuket Gazette. Drive aimlessly around the island looking for "house for rent" signs. You may stumble onto the perfect fit like I did. 2 bedroom, aircon, furnished, 2 car covered garage, fenced, quiet, jungle view, security cat included, well lit, security cameras all around which I can see via the itnernet, decent landlord. All for 10,000/mo and I pay month to month.

Good luck.

I would say if your used to a CM budget.. come and spend some time first.. Theres a lot more than housing costs that are effected and if your tight on funds you should be aware of that.

Last time I was in CM it was a big change in day to day costs.

Thanks very much for the replies, greatly appreciated.

It's reassuring to know that at least there is a lot of accommodation available and I agree that it's probably best to just come and look around first.

I do realise that Phuket's living costs are much higher than Chiangmai for certain things. However, I feel that once I get the accommodation at the right cost, then other household expenses i.e. TV, telephone, wireless, electricity etc are about the same.

I don't drink (alcohol) much and not into girlie bars. Mostly I'm vegetarian and can shop and cook for myself and I'm sure there are markets, so I'm not really too much bothered about the costs other than nailing the accommodation.

Thanks once again :)

Electricity with aircon; 1200-1800 baht, no aircon 300-500 baht. Internet Maxnet 3mb Indy; 590 baht. UBC; extortionists, don't bother. Get something else. I'll let you know when I do, but I will likely be setting up a slingbox from back home. Priceless (sorry had to say that) :)

Sounds about the same as Chiangmai. I have UBC right now and agree that they are WAY overpriced and the programmes mostly rubbish. However, I do enjoy the extensive coverage of the Premier League in England plus La Liga and serie A.

Do keep in touch - I PM'd you, did you get it? A

A friend of mine just rented a (very basic) house in Kamala with some garden for 5000/month. With 8-10k you find something really nice now. Forget about real estate agents, they are crazy and desperate at the moment.

And about other costs you are perfectly right, i have your same lifestyle and living in CM or Phuket just cost the same for us (if you have your own transportation).

Thanks for this and I will certainly avoid agents. I was pretty sure that once I nailed the accommodation everything else would be about the same as Chiangmai. Yes, I have my own transportation, which will help. Things are looking good. :D

Hi and thanks very much for the link.

The houses look a bit overpriced for what they are - it's usual with agencies I guess. :)

Just find the area u wish to live in a drive around. DO NOT use a service or any links as they will only add to the price.

I just returned to Phuket (Kamala) after a year in Cambodia and there are about 30 houses for rent from 10,000-50,000/month. If someone paid only 5,000 it must be very very small and in a tract of other small houses i saw and i wouldn't live in one for free. I got nice one for 12,000

You can find cheaper homes/apts in Patong back on and off nai na road but who the F@$k would want to live in Patong or Phuket town.

You sure you feel that way? after 10 years you will have a very deep subconscious bond with where you are now. Living in BKK gets a bit crazy and a break of a week every few months to any beach is brilliant and gets me thinking I could live here but always end up itching to get back to the real world. Why not try several extended stays first

Seriously consider having a look at Cha am or Hua Hin...far far better value for everything from accomodation, food, transport, drinks, golf to entertainment...logisticaly placed better than Phuket, only a 90 minute drive from central BKK for 180 baht...flights, and trains also available......great fishing, seafood a third of the price they charge in Phuket and think you will find the people, both local and foreign more hospitable than that in Phuket.....just an idea for you..also one or two others have resettled here from Chaing Mai

The house of my friend is basic but not bad at all, and furnished too with pretty good quality staff. Guess he was lucky...

Very strange what you said about who want to live in P.town or Patong.

Think that even though i speak about that house, Kamala for me is the last place i would want to live in Phuket!!

The beach is not nice, no shopping, no hospitals and the place is cut in half by the big road and always that sense of sadness there...i prefer to live in Kathu, near P.Town, which is a real Thai city, full of life and offers many more things to do and the possibility to go to any beach you like in short distance since i am in the middle of the island (not to mention lower prices for everything).

Different peolple different views....

I agree that a bond has been formed after so long, but I have formed attachments with other places too and moved on with success. I think its just a matter of looking at new places objectively and of course everywhere is different. Its good to hear the opinions of people both good and bad and I certainly appreciate the time people have given to help provide some answers. I hear of different areas of Phuket...Patong, Kamala, Kathu, Rawai and Phuket town itself, but I guess I really need to have a look for myself. Does anyone know if any of the areas of Phuket has a Lawn Bowling Club? (yes, I'm a boring old fart) :)
