Recently contacted some factories to manufacture an item for export sales.

Was given various quotes and was told regarding actual production everything was pending a 75 day "approval" from the BOI

If anyone is familiar with this "approval" process please explain it ???

Getting quotes from some factories in Guanzhao , China and there is none of this retarded hindrance in doing business there.

Strange...maybe your product has something to do with chemicals or biotechnology ? otherwise I wouldn't know why your product needs an approval from the Board of Investment.

Actually it has little to do with either.

Are the items being manufactured using raw materials that are imported? Is your contractor enjoying some sort of tax holiday that must be renewed for your project?

There is any number of things the BOI may do that reduces the cost for your contractor. The approval is most likely not an hindrance (other then the bureaucracy of it) but rather a benefit, at least to your contractor.

Curious as to why you have not taken to the time to see what incentives the BOI may have for you.

Yeah, what he said... :)

If they are a BOI company and this product and raw materials required to make it were not already on their BOI List, they would need to apply to add them.

This would allow them to import the Raw Material needed Duty free and one would presume that you would also benefit from the lower costs.

So, if you are serious about it, then let them do what needs to be done to lower their manufacturing costs...

most likely as it is using a high grade stainless steel

no idea

not to me if it takes 75 days on top of production time

the only incentive is to look to China where they offer a 30 day turnaround

Does that confuse you for some reason ? :)

Where do you think the bulk of the worlds manufacturing takes place these days ?

Jimmy, Thaicbr...was being sarcastic, granted a considerble amount of maufacturing does get done in China, but generally the quality of said product on the whole is cr*p.,

Can cite a specific example from last year when a major shipment of "high quality" stainless seamless piping and fittings (elbows,T's etc) was shipped to (I think it was) a BP site and on inspection it was picked up on that all pipe and fittings had been welded together, ground flush (in attempt to look seamless) and all the documentation fiddled...

To say nothing of a Chinese businessman promising a 30 day turnaround.

Right , less the 75 day grace period for the BOI approval as required to do business here in Thailand.

Thanks for your very useful input.... :)
