Running Java From An External Drive.

Featured Replies

I am away from home and only have my Linux laptop with me. I need to run windows based software that uses JAVA. My only option is to use my works MS PC. Unfortunately this PC does not have JAVA installed and some sort of firewall that I can't remove is stopping me from downloading it. My idea is to somehow download the windows JAVA onto my external hard drive and use this to run the software on the MS machine. Will I be able to run it from the hard drive or will I have to install it from the hard drive, or will it just not work at all?

Thanks

Edit: I've read on the JAVA website that it is possible to download and install offline, but it doesn't say if I will be able to install to my external drive.

Pretty sure you can target the external drive when you run the install....however it will probably want to manipulate some files on the C: drive as well (ie: the windows registry). You should google for "portable java" to find a jdk that is designed to be run from a usb thumbdrive.
