Chiang Mai To Mae Sai

Featured Replies

Off on border run tomo from Chiang Mai to Mae Sai. Been told its just one straight easy road, not turnings, nothing, is this correct?? Also just wanna double check Im taking the right road. The left turning is at the intersection before carrefour and on the opposite side of the road has a big police or army building. Also theink there is a hospital if you are coming out of that road on the left. Can anyone verify?? Are the roads quite safe etc??

the road to chiang rai and just keep going. the road is fine and it's a doddle of a run.

following on from stevie, when you go over the river at chiang rai you will start to see signs for mae sai the road starts to head sort of east north east past chiang rai airport and on.

i assume you have a visa and not a 30 day tourist visit that will only be renewed with a couple of weeks

Very good road.I would hardly call it straight though. Just watch out for people coming at you in your lane as they pass a truck on the bends.

Remember you only get a 14 day stamp unless you have a re entry permit.

You want highway 118 from CM to CR. Mae Sai is sign posted from CR. Very easy and good roads. You can be there and back in half a day if you go by big bike.

May be off topic a bit but you may like to consider when coming back heading across from Mae Suai towards Fang and then down to CM adds a bit but the road from Mae Suai to Fang is quiet but good and would give great riding and the ride down from the Fang turn off goes across two mountain ranges coming down to CM. I have only done it by car but a bikewould be fantastic.

The last time i was there, i took $10 and handed it to him and he declined it and asked for 500 Bht i suppose they now realise 500ht is better than 340 Bht $10

Stop offs for meals and t & p along the way include 'Cabbages and Condoms' on your right, north of Mekajarn (good Thai food) and Charin Garden Resort, on your right about 60kms south of C.Rai. This is my favourite with Thai and western menu, genuine American cakes and desserts being a speciality. Reasonable prices and super loos.

i am planning to go there for a day trip from Phayao - i understand it is possible to get a day visa in Mae Sai . Is this correct ?

if you are asking about a visa to go into burma, no problem, pay your money and they give you a cuple of weeks but if i remember they take your passport off you, give you a bit of card and then give you it back when you go back

If you are a masochist try it on a Honda Dream like I did once, never ever again got there at 3 PM after an early start from Lamphun and ended up with a very saw behind. Also got stopped at 2 check points and had to show passport.

did the whole thing on a click and yes my behind was rather sore after three days of driving, but it was well worth it, completely peaceful and fresh air in some parts. Only thing is there is a stretch of road, which is quite unbelievable. The cars literally come down the worng side of the road right at you. I was forced to stop twice as it just seemed to near, then on the same road there is a bridge which if hit too fast, like I did its literally like being on a fairground ride, my arse was about three feet in the air from the seat and just about held on. Apart from that a really enjoyable trip. Cheers for your help guys :-)

did border run at mai sai yesterday. straight forward , paid 500baht, told burma guy no time for shopping and he did entry and exit together and then straight back to thailand, all done in 20 minutes.

no viagara, no cialis, no sexy dvd, no cigarettes, no nothing, just another 90 days in LOS
