Hi all,

just wondering if it's possible to get a passport for my son, without registering the birth...

He's currently with his mother in Thailand while we await her visa decision.

I've read through the website and it would seem to me, whilst it is obviously advisable to register the birth, it is not essential. Can anyone confirm this?

Basically, the way I understand it, the same ID and documents needed for registering the birth can be used to get him a passport.

There are a few reasons why I don't want to it at the moment, mainly the cost and the fact that my girlfriends visa is due anytime now (fingers crossed) and if she gets it, we need to get my son a passport (because alot of the documents are in with her application) then after that we need to get her daughter a visa (because some family stuff has changed and she can no longer stay with my girl's parents for a few months as we originally planned) and I'm worried about the timeframe. She needs to be in uk fairly shortly after the visa is stamped I think...

No, you don't. I've done both our kids' UK passports without registering the births. Both done quickly and smoothly at Bangkok embassy.

If you'd done it sooner, it may have had a positive effect on your wife's visa. Never mind.

Hey thanks...

Yeah I know we should have done it before, but as I was only in thailand for 3 weeks, I couldn't do it because it says they need my passport and cannot accept a photocopy. I was worried I wouldn't get my passport back in time to go home.

Now I'm just going to post the passport over with my birth certificate (which I didn't have when I was in thailand) and the completed form.
