Chavalit quits politics but will keep advising

BANGKOK: -- Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh yesterday announced his retirement from politics, saying he will not accept any post in the new government.

But the caretaker deputy prime minister will still be around to give advice on issues previously his responsibility including poverty, land reform and illicit drugs.

``I'm retiring from politics. I won't take any post or get involved with politics. It's time to take a rest,'' said Gen Chavalit, a former prime minister.

Gen Chavalit, 73, also said he would let all his aides return to their original units.
