DSI runs check on seized car

The Department of Special Investigation is looking into the circumstances surrounding a seized car used by a prime suspect in the attempted assassination of Sondhi Limthongkul after it was found to have a fake licence plate. The Chevrolet, which was once allegedly used for drug trafficking, was parked at the Bangkok home of suspect Worawut Mungsanti's mother-in-law, Somsuan Sirijaroenying.

The car was seized on Tuesday by police investigating the assassination attempt on Mr Sondhi, a core leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, who was attacked by gunmen on April 17 near the Bang Khun Phrom intersection on Samsen Road in Bangkok. DSI Deputy Chief Narat Sawettanand said the car's licence plate, Sor Vor 8051 Bangkok, was fake.

Its genuine licence was Kor Sor 3737 Chiang Mai. The car was one of five vehicles seized by the DSI from drug suspect Channarong Musor on March 20, Police Captain Narat said. The DSI seized assets worth 117 million baht and five vehicles from Mr Channarong and sent the vehicles to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau.

DSI to probe Chevrolet's owner

The Department of Special Investigation has set up a team to look into the Chevrolet Safina sedan seized from the mother-in-law of a suspect in the assassination attempt on People's Alliance for Democracy leader Sondhi Limthongkul, after it was found with a fake licence plate.

Narat Sawettanant, DSI Deputy Director-General, said yesterday that the car carried a Bangkok licence plate even though it was registered in Chiang Mai to Channarong Muser, a drug suspect arrested by the DSI on March 20.

This car was among five vehicles confiscated along with Bt117 million worth of Channarong's assets.

The DSI then employed the five cars for civil service work.

The Narcotics Control Board approved the official use of the cars in June, but they were still in the process of being listed in the DSI's seized vehicle management system so that they could be given civil service licence plates.

It was believed that the Sondhi case suspect, Police Lance Corporal Worawuth Mungsanti, who was a Narcotic Suppression Police officer seconded to the DSI, might have started using the car in the meantime, Narat said.

The DSI would give full cooperation to police investigators and its chief, Tawee Sodsong, had already assigned a fact-finding committee on Tuesday to determine how Worawuth got hold of the car and whether it was a violation of regulations, he added.

Sondhi links hit attempt suspect to DSI

Police officer worked for Department Chief, he says

Sondhi Limthongkul, a key People's Alliance for Democracy leader, has exposed what he says are links between a prime suspect in the attempt on his life and the Department of Special Investigation.

Mr Sondhi yesterday said he had obtained a DSI letter showing that Worawut Mungsanti, a suspect in the assassination attempt, had worked for DSI Chief Thawee Sodsong. The letter, dated Feb 18, appointed three DSI investigation teams and Police Corporal Worawut was a member of the third one working for the DSI's Information Technology Office, said Mr Sondhi, who was attacked by gunmen on April 17 near Bang Khun Phrom intersection on Samsen Road in Bangkok.

Worawut is one of three suspects who have had arrest warrants issued for them over their suspected involvement in the attempt to kill Mr Sondhi. The officer was posted to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) before he was assigned to the DSI. But the DSI denied the officer had worked for it. Mr Sondhi said the letter provided clear evidence showing the accused officer had worked for the DSI Chief. Many parties were involved in the April 17 shooting attack, he added.
