torrenova Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 I've a friend who is in Germany on a visa who wishes to travel over to the UK whilst in Europe. I know it sounds simple to say that they just have to apply for a visa to the UK but the situation is not the same as they are already in Germany, some paperwork is perhaps not in Germany and they would not be returning to Thailand but rather to Germany. The other thing is the likely waiting time. They want the visa and then get the tickets etc. I'm not sure if they are staying with friends or in hotels. If hotels then no reservation could be made beforehand getting the visa obviously and if staying at a friends then does that friend have to form part of the visa application ? I'd guess it would be easier if they could just be given a visa for a week or so and pop over whenever the flight was cheapest. They'd already have insurance etc. from their German visa application I suppose. Any pointers ?
7by7 Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 What type of German visa does your friend have? Visit? Settlement? Student? If visit, it may be difficult as one is normally supposed to apply in one's country of residence. Your friend should apply in the normal way, supplying the usual evidence, especially showing that she will return to Germany after her visit. How long they will have to wait, I don't know; but I doubt it will be as long as it is in Bangkok at the moment. See this page for where to apply.

If your friend is here in Germany, it is normally a Schengen-Visa, so can move free to all Schengen-States, also to UK.
timonase Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 If the Uk quickly signs the schengen treaty!!!!! unfortunately the have not and your friend will have to apply for a visa for the UK. A friend of mine ( Thai) was able to do it in Hamburg, while being in Germany. regards Timo

Not true, for a visit visa for the UK you can apply at any british embassy/consulate regardless of your country of residence. It's only settlement visas that you have to apply at your country of residence. Martin
7by7 Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Correct, one can apply for a visit visa from a country other than the one where one normally lives; provided one is in that country legally. My mistake. The same applies for EEA family permits. All other types of visa, not just settlement, must be applied for in one's normal county of residence.

The UK is not in the Schengen zone. A seperate UK visa is required.
