Howdy.... I'm moving to Thailand soon and I *really* need fast, reliable internet with reliable, fast connectivity to the US.

I've read about the topic of leased lines. I'm willing to do it if it's necessary, even if expensive. I do have my doubts about whether they're as good as reported to be. Do they really give 24/7/365 their stated DL speeds from the US? The money for a leased line, it seems may be better spend getting 3 (or more) ADSL lines.

I'm wondering if anyone has used a leased line or similar service, with guaranteed bandwidth 24/7/365 from/to the US. If so, did it work as promised? How much did it cost?

Thanks for any help -

You never know in Thailand you need to try the leased line in your area. Some times when i change place i make sure the internet will be there before i move in. Leased line is about 15 000 THB a month. But it deppends on where you live how fast it will be. What ever they write in the documents......

Hi.

I have experience work-wise with ISSP, True and CS Loxinfo. Each one in the 1M/1M variant.

ISSP had by far the best service and best speed results, giving the advertised speed (1 Mbit/s up and down) 24/7 with zero unplanned outages in about one year, a few service interruptions due to equipment updates were announced by SMS 12 hours and 3 hours before they took place and if the connection was lost (due to a power failure at the office for example) immediately another SMS was sent informing me of the issue. ISSP you can, apparently, get everywhere regardless whose wires come into your house.

True is ok, too - their speed somewhat varies, i.e. some days you get only half what you are supposed to get but there was never an outage at all, neither planned nor un-planned. Their service is also a hit-and-miss affair, for example if there are speed problems (which happened often!) you have to stay on the phone for quite some time before they find someone able to speak English. Every single call ends in the usual "we will check and call you back" - i am still waiting for all those callbacks today as they NEVER actually call back. True you can get where ever True land-lines are available, i.e. most areas.

Currently i'm using CS Loxinfo. Speed is pretty much perfect - i haven't noticed a drop over more than 20 kbit/s, i.e. i get what i pay for, all the time. I have however only been using this line for the past couple of months and today, for the first time, got issues - the connection kept dropping. Immediately after dialing their service number i was (by a tape) informed that they have problems with international connections. The very first person to pick up the phone spoke English rather fluent and advised me that there are indeed problems with a node and they would call me back if they know more. And about 20 minutes later they DID call, having found that the problem lies in Singapore and is under repair. About an hour later it was working fine again. CS Loxinfo you can NOT get everywhere, in areas where there are True land-lines you can NOT get them.

Price-wise ISSP, being the best of those three, is also the most expensive at 36,000 Baht/month. True is the cheapest at just over 17,000 Baht and CS Loxinfo charges 25,000 Baht roughly, all inclusive tax. Again, each line is the 1 Megabit type. ISSP and CS Loxinfo give you 16 IP addresses (real IP's) of which three are already used by the system, additional IP's can be bought for a one-off payment, 1,800 Baht for either provider per block of 16. Each block of 16 IP's has in fact again "only" 13 usable ones. True don't give real IP's, you need to use DHCP.

Best regards.....

Thanh,

That's great info - thanks so much.

I'm leaning towards getting 3 forms of connectivity: leased line from one of the providers you mention, plus 2 ADSL lines, and routing all of those into a load-balancing router. The SME ADSL packages often are faster than 1M, so it would make sense to have them in addition to a leased line, plus if the leased line goes down, I would at least have backup connectivity.

Not sure which would be the best leased line provider based on the info you listed, but it's reassuring to at least know that they generally do actually work.

I moved to BKK (Sukh Soi 31) in January 1st and am currently on TOT 8 MB. Speedtests show roughly 9 MB(!) for Thailand but the dreaded 700 KB (at best) for Farang Land. I guess that is normal. Also not always stable albeit mostly.

So now also toying with the idea of a leased line and guaranteed international bandwith. Have emailed several providers and here is my first quotation from Kirz:

Dear X,

We can provide you with Fiber optic transmission line to your unit if your priority is STABILITY and GUARANTEED International Bandwidth. Please see Tariff beneath for your consideration.

BW (1:1) Media Monthly Tariff (in baht) exclude VAT

2M Copper 30300

4M FO 51000

6M FO 76500

10M FO 127100

Above tariff requires minimum 1 year contract. There will be 20,000 baht for installation charge (one time). This not include the building entrance fee, and in-building wiring.

Installation charge will include putting new fiber optic line from our nearest node to X building in MDF room, and having our engineer configuring the router at your unit. The lead time for installation is between 3-5 weeks.

We’ve network monitoring team standby 24/7. From my experience, this solution is the most suitable one for our foreign client who concern International BW quality. Please likely see our profile and reference in attachments.

Best regards,

X
