Also worth visiting the National Museum on the Superhighway just adjacent to the start of the underpass under the Mae Rim junction as you are travelling away from Huay Kaew Road. Easy to miss so take it slowly. A bit of natural history with fossils and the like and a whole lot about the founding of Chiang Mai and the history of Lanna.

Best not mention his name as he is still alive and in town. But he is one of CM's characters of the 1990's and now sports a luxuriant white beard.
