I am planning a trip to Bali. I would like to know which all are the spots that are a must visit in Bali ...the main bali temples , the famous volcano and the best wood shopping spot there.

Can i rent out a car out there and drive across ? Which is the best place to stay along with a family ... i am not a nightlife people ..but would like to have some buzz around ...not very quite

How much approx would a 2 feet teak wood wood work cost ? any idea ?

Planning a 3 day stay and rent a car ...how much would a per day cost for it be ?? :)

My wife and i went to Bali a couple of months ago. I had not been there since 1974 but while the place has obviously changed the Balinese have retained a certain charm if you avoid the touts which mainly are imports from Java chasing a quick buck.

We stayed at Sanur Beach, mid range accom, in the unfortuantly named Swastika Bungalows (more a resort hotel). Forgeting the name which has a different meaning in Hindu, its one of the nicest places I have ever stayed in. Huge ,clean rooms ,friendly ,helpful staff most of who have been there for a long time, buffet breakfast 2 swimming pools and a 5 minute walk to the beach. We paid $32 Aus a night buying 6 nights and getting one free.with an airport P/U.

Which brings me to the question why are you staying only 3 nights ? Not enough unless you want to be going a million miles an hour. Food quality is excellent and and we found on a par or slightly cheaper than Thailand but service and quality better. We went to the volcano and cycled back, a fabulous downhill tour through villages and quiet back roads ,the family would love it. There is bird and reptile park which is ok and several other attractions. Woodwork is plentiful in Udon.but we didnt buy We hired a car and driver, not expensive but be prepared to haggle. The island is relatively small but traffic problems developing.

Finally being near the equator its extremely hot. At the hotel the air cons were left running al day not by us but by the staff

Hey, SPARKLES, you must have been in Thailand waaaayyyy too long if u refer to the Balinese arts-, paintings- and Woodwork-town as "UDON" instead of the real name "UBUD" :)

apart from that, I second what u said that 3 days for a first-timer is definitely not enough.

renting a car (a Suzuki Jeep or something like that) can be great fun and is recommended, but people should be aware that the driving style in Indonesia in general is different than in Thailand - chaotic same way, but unfortunately more aggressive.

But thanks god there is not too much traffic in Bali once u leave the Kuta/Legian-tourist area or Denpasar.

prices for Jeeps are VERY cheap and usually start at 120.000 IDR for a wreck, from a reputable company you should get a Jeep with good insurance for no more than 200.000 IDR a day.

just google for it as I did a few weeks ago, plenty of options.....

as for nightlife, the only area REALLY having a pulsating nightlife IS Kuta/Legian. Seminyak is a few minutes north and more laidback, but still has at least SOME nightlife to offer (and certainly more sophisticated than the KUTA watering holes), including the famous/infamous DOUBLE6 - club, definitely one of the raunchiest and most popular places in South-East-Asia. Seminyak is a good place to stay if you wanna be relatively close to the action, but still enjoy an undisturbed sleep at night. though, less accomodation-options than 3 km down in Kuta where all h-e-l-l breaks loose at many nights when hordes of drunken 19-year old Aussies noisily stumble back to their rooms in the wee hours....

Its the "if you can avoid the touts" part mentioned above that can be a problem. Easy to ignore in Denpassar, less easy to avoid when you have stopped your car at a totally idylic and seemingly deserted spot with a wonderful view of the rice terraces only to find that when you open your car doors to take a picture hordes of vendors emerge from the trees and jump up and down in front of you making sure you can't get your pics until you have bought sufficient of thier goods. Go to look at the volcano but don't attempt to venture up it without an extortionately priced "guide"...again Javanese...not that its dangerous, just that your car will have some rather large scratches upon it when you return.

Lovely place, just too many hassles and 3 days is certainly not long enough to learn how to avoid them.

My apologies for the Udon/Ubud slip up blame the Elephant beer.

Touts are not as big a problem in the Sanur Beach area.In fact on the beach near a couple of the more up market resorts they are simply hunted off by the security guards and signs are up warning then to clear off.

I dont think the OP was looking for pulsating nightlife he is taking his family. The resort I mentioned Swastika is only 150 metres from Hardys Supermarket where they have great range of wine , cheese ,breads etc if you feel like hanging around the pool or your room which have fridges.
