A question for anyone who has some knowledge of how the visa system works.

I met my Thai gf in March, and she has since visited me 2 times on a tourist visa. The first time was for a 2 week trip, and the second time was with the intention of staying for 3 months. Unfortunately 5 weeks into her trip her mother had a fall and was hospitalised resulting in my gf returning immediately to her mum about 2-3 weeks ago.

I will be going to Thailand in November to visit her for one week. We are hoping to get her another tourist visa so she can return with me to Australia for 3 months and try again.

1. What are the chances of getting 3 tourist visas in a short space of time like that?

2. If she can prove the hospitalisation of her mother will that increase her chances of getting another visa?

The embassy has told her to provide proof of her mum's hospitalisation and submit another application, but naturally offered no hint of the likelihood of success.

She will apply again in October, but being such a curious creature I am wondering if anyone has any insights into the likely outcome?

In the past the granting of a third visa was questionable with reports of applicants being told that they had to apply for a spouse visa on the grounds that the GF was no longer a tourist. My friends girl was recently granted a third visa on the grounds that she had met a new BF (my friend) on her second trip and they hadnt known each other long enough to successfully apply for a spouse visa and couldnt meet the ongoing relationship requirement. She was told that further tourist visas would not be granted.

While there is no time limit on applying for visas, it may be hard to show a genuine and ongoing relationship having known each other for such a short time if you are required to apply for the spouse visa, it may pay to look at a 12 month multi entry tourist visa by ticking the 12 month box on the application. The length of valid visa time is determined by the Embassy.....you can apply for a 12 month and get it or end up with a three or six month visa instead.

There is also the wording of the visa requirements in that it is intended for people to travel as a tourist OR to visit family and friends. the way you word your letter of support may assist.

I would say that if they have asked her to provide the hospital details and if it was an extenuating circumstance that they may well consider that the second visa was not completed and re assess under that point.

Each application is always considered on its own merits and there is no insight that can be given to the likelihood of success or not. You lodge the applications and then wait for the powers to be to determine the outcome.
